Selena Gomez may be heading into one of the boldest roles of her career.
The 33-year-old former Disney star is reportedly set to appear alongside Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender in ‘The Origin Of The World’, a new film from Oscar-nominated director Brady Corbet. The project is already raising eyebrows because Corbet previously described it as a bold feature.
The movie is also rumored to run close to four hours, which only adds to the curiosity around what could become Gomez’s most unexpected big-screen turn yet.
Selena Gomez Joins Brady Corbet Film
‘The Origin Of The World’ is said to be set mainly in the 1970s, though Corbet has suggested the story spans a much wider timeline.
“The film spans from the 19th century into the present day,” Corbet said in a 2025 interview. “It’s just predominantly focused on the ‘70s. The film is really, really genre-defying.”
Blanchett appeared to confirm her involvement during a Cannes Film Festival masterclass over the weekend, saying she was “about to work with Brady Corbet on a film.” The project would also reunite Blanchett with Fassbender, her co-star from the 2025 psychological thriller ‘Black Dog’.
For Gomez, the role would mark a sharp shift from her Disney roots and her recent work in prestige television and film.
Gomez’s First Major Film Since ‘Emilia Pérez’
If the reports hold, ‘The Origin Of The World’ will be Gomez’s first major feature film since ‘Emilia Pérez’, the 2024 crime musical that became one of the most talked-about awards contenders of its year.
The film made history at the 2025 Academy Awards with 13 Oscar nominations, the most ever for a non-English-language film.
Gomez has also remained busy with ‘Only Murders In The Building’, where she has been filming Season 6 of the hit series.
The timing makes the new movie rumor even more interesting. Gomez is already in a more mature phase of her career, and working with Corbet, Blanchett, and Fassbender would place her in a very different creative lane.
Selena And Benny Blanco Reportedly Want A Family Soon
Away from acting, Gomez is also reportedly focused on family plans with her husband, Benny Blanco.
The couple married in September, and insiders claim they are hoping to start a family soon. According to sources, Gomez and Blanco have been exploring surrogacy and adoption. “Bring up the subject of starting a family with Benny or Selena, and you hear the same sense of urgency from both of them,” one insider said. “They want this to happen now, not later.”
Gomez has previously spoken about the medical issues that would make carrying a child dangerous for her. She has had a kidney transplant connected to lupus and has also discussed medication tied to her bipolar disorder. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy,” Gomez said. “That was something I had to grieve for a while.”
Still, she said she sees surrogacy and adoption as meaningful possibilities. “I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption,” she said.
Between a rumored adult-rated film, a major acting shift, and private family hopes becoming public, Gomez appears to be entering a very loaded new chapter.
