Meryl Streep and Martin Short have not confirmed a romance, but Hollywood is still having a field day with the idea.
The speculation began after Streep joined Short on ‘Only Murders in the Building’ during the show’s third season. Their chemistry quickly became a talking point, and fans have been watching every public appearance since.
Now, a new report claims Streep’s estranged husband, Don Gummer, has accepted the possibility that she may have moved on.
Don Gummer Reportedly Feels At Peace
A source close to Gummer told the Daily Mail that the sculptor has come to terms with the end of his marriage to Streep.
“If this relationship with Martin had started immediately after the split, it would have been devastating for Don,” the insider said. “But enough time has passed that he’s genuinely at peace with it now.”
Streep and Gummer married in 1978, shortly after the death of Streep’s former partner, John Cazale. Their relationship began in an unusual way, after Streep moved into Gummer’s apartment while he was away in Pakistan. The two connected through letters and married later that year.
Meryl Streep And Don Gummer Built A Long Marriage
Over more than four decades, Streep and Gummer raised four children together: Henry, Mary, Grace and Louisa.
They spent much of their family life in Connecticut before returning to Manhattan after their children grew up. Their last public appearance together came in 2018.
Streep and Gummer’s separation became public in 2023, though they had reportedly been living separate lives for several years before that.
The insider said Gummer had been especially concerned about how their children would handle the split.
“Don was particularly concerned about how the children would cope,” the source said.
Martin Short Rumors Keep Fans Guessing
Short has also been single for years. His wife, Nancy Dolman, died in 2010.
That shared timing only added to the public fascination around Streep and Short. Their warm appearances together and playful chemistry on ‘Only Murders in the Building’ have kept fans hoping there is something more than friendship.
Still, neither star has confirmed a relationship.
As for Gummer, the source says he is not bitter about the rumors. But that does not mean he is rushing to watch Short’s work.
“Don won’t be binge-watching ‘Three Amigos’ or ‘Only Murders’ anytime soon,” the insider said.
So, is this Hollywood’s sweetest late-in-life romance or just wishful fan casting? For now, Streep and Short are keeping everyone guessing.
