Donald Trump’s Knicks night gave Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez an easy opening.
The president attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on June 8, sitting in a suite with his granddaughter Kai Trump and several high-ranking administration officials. But one clip from the night quickly became the bigger story online.
In footage shared on X, Trump appeared to close his eyes for a stretch while seated during the game.
Ocasio-Cortez quoted the clip and went straight for the punchline. “WAKE UP,” she wrote. The post immediately turned Trump’s MSG appearance into another viral political pile-on.
AOC Mocked Trump Over The Viral Clip
Ocasio-Cortez’s post played directly into a familiar line of criticism from Trump’s opponents: that the president often attacks rivals over age, stamina, and energy, only to face similar scrutiny himself.
The clip did not prove Trump was fully asleep, but it was enough for critics to run with the moment.
AOC’s response was short, blunt, and built for social media. It also landed during a night that had already gone badly for Trump in front of a loud New York crowd.
Trump had come to Madison Square Garden for a major NBA Finals matchup between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. Instead, he became part of the spectacle.

Trump Was Booed During The Anthem
Trump’s presence at the game drew criticism before tipoff.
His visit brought heavy security around Madison Square Garden, including road disruptions, canceled outdoor watch party plans, barriers, and screening procedures for attendees.
Inside the arena, the reaction was not exactly warm.
After brief “USA” chants for the flag, Trump was loudly booed when he appeared on the arena’s large video screens during the national anthem.
After the game, Trump claimed the reaction had been “mostly cheers.”
That did not stop critics from focusing on the boos, the security disruption, and then the clip that appeared to show him resting his eyes during the game.
His MSG Visit Became A Political Target
Trump attended the game with granddaughter, Kai Trump. Knicks owner James Dolan, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, and Environmental Protection Agency director Lee Zeldin were also seen nearby.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani had also planned to attend the matchup, though Trump said the two did not meet during the game.
The Knicks’ loss added another awkward layer to the night. Trump’s appearance had already disrupted the area around the arena, and the home crowd did not get the win it wanted.
For AOC and other critics, the clip of Trump seemingly closing his eyes became the final piece of a bad optics night.
He arrived to boos. His visit brought complaints over security. Then AOC turned the alleged nap moment into a viral jab.
Trump has long branded himself as high-energy and sharp. That is why footage like this tends to spread quickly.
At Madison Square Garden, the game was supposed to be the main event. By the end of the night, Trump’s eyes and AOC’s troll had stolen much of the attention.
