The ‘Helldivers’ movie just lost its biggest name, but the mission is not over.
Jason Momoa has reportedly exited PlayStation Productions’ planned adaptation of the hit video game franchise. The project is now searching for a new lead while still moving ahead behind the scenes.
For fans of Super Earth, that is a serious shake-up. Momoa had been expected to bring major action-star energy to the film after signing on in early 2026.
Jason Momoa Reportedly Exits ‘Helldivers’
The ‘Helldivers’ movie was first announced during Sony’s CES press conference in January 2025, after ‘Helldivers 2’ became one of PlayStation’s biggest recent gaming success stories.
The franchise began as a top-down twin-stick shooter centered on soldiers battling alien and robotic threats in the name of Super Earth and its version of managed democracy.
‘Helldivers 2’ changed the formula with a third-person perspective, putting players directly into chaotic battlefield missions. The sequel became a major online hit, with player numbers rising around updates and new content drops.
That success made a movie adaptation feel almost inevitable.
PlayStation Productions Searches For New Lead
Momoa’s departure leaves the film with a major casting hole. Still, producers are reportedly pushing forward and looking for a new star to anchor the adaptation.
The movie is being produced by Hutch Parker, along with PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Lin’s Perfect Storm Entertainment.
That team now faces a big question: who can carry a loud, violent, satirical sci-fi action movie built around war, chaos and dark comedy?
The wrong casting could flatten the whole thing. The right one could turn ‘Helldivers’ into exactly the kind of wild blockbuster fans want.
The Movie Still Has Franchise Potential
PlayStation Productions has already moved several games toward the screen, including ‘Uncharted,’ ‘Until Dawn’ and ‘Ratchet & Clank.’ That gives ‘Helldivers’ a clear path, even after this setback.
The challenge is tone. ‘Helldivers’ is not just about action. Its appeal comes from the mix of military spectacle, absurd propaganda and players accidentally causing total mayhem.
Momoa leaving may slow momentum, but it does not kill the project. If anything, the recasting could define what kind of movie ‘Helldivers’ becomes.
Super Earth may have lost its first leading man. But the fight, apparently, continues.
