Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster’s romance may not be as smooth as the red-carpet photos suggest.
The 57-year-old ‘X-Men’ actor has reportedly hit a serious pause in wedding talks with Foster, 51, after she allegedly warned that his emotional “meltdowns” need to be addressed before they take the next step.
According to Globe Magazine, Foster still loves Jackman, but she allegedly does not want to move toward marriage until he becomes more emotionally steady and self-reliant.
The report has not been confirmed by Jackman, Foster, or their representatives. Still, it adds a messy new layer to a relationship that has already attracted heavy attention because of both stars’ recent divorces.
Sutton Foster Reportedly Wants Hugh Jackman To Do The Work
An insider claimed Foster has drawn a firm line with Jackman.
“Sutton loves him dearly, but she says if they’re going to move forward, he needs to do some serious work on himself,” the source alleged.
The report claims Foster feels she did not sign up to become Jackman’s “full-time emotional support system.” Another account from Rob Shuter’s ‘Naughty but Nice’ Substack made a similar claim, saying Foster has allegedly started to feel responsible for managing Jackman’s mood.
According to Globe Magazine’s source, Foster believes there is “a lot that he hasn’t come to terms with in his life” and wants him to become “more self-reliant emotionally.”
The same insider alleged that Jackman struggles whenever he faces negative headlines or feels professionally slighted.
Every time that happens, the source claimed, “he has a meltdown.”
Wedding Rumors Were Heating Up Before The New Claims
The timing makes the report more awkward.
Only weeks earlier, the public story around Jackman and Foster was much more romantic. They appeared together at the 2026 Met Gala, where cameras focused on their affectionate body language and the sparkling ring on Foster’s hand.
The ring was not worn on a traditional engagement finger, but it was enough to restart speculation.
New Idea previously reported that the pair were secretly engaged after a New Year trip to Costa Rica. According to that report, Jackman allegedly proposed on impulse with a diamond solitaire ring Foster would show off when the time was right. The same outlet claimed the couple had been scouting possible wedding and honeymoon locations whenever they had a few free days.
There was also talk of a small ceremony, a European honeymoon, and a visit to Jackman’s mother once Foster’s divorce from screenwriter Ted Griffin was finalized.
Now, the new claims make that plan sound far less certain.

Jackman finalized his divorce from Deborra-Lee Furness last year after nearly three decades of marriage. Foster is still working through her split from Griffin, with whom she shares a young daughter.
That already made the relationship complicated.
Previous reports claimed Jackman struggled with the backlash surrounding his divorce from Furness. The new report suggests Foster may be sympathetic, but also tired of carrying the emotional weight.

Furness has also been pulled into the narrative. She previously spoke broadly about “the traumatic journey of betrayal” and the “profound wound” of her marriage breakdown, comments widely read as a response to Jackman’s new relationship.
Around the same period, reports claimed she planned to buy Jackman’s share of the New York penthouse they once shared, shortly after he and Foster were seen moving in.
What seems clear so far is that Foster is not ending the romance. She is asking Jackman to prove he can stand on steadier ground before they talk about forever.
