Adam Driver just gave a very Adam Driver answer to the Lena Dunham memoir controversy.
The ‘Star Wars’ actor was asked at the Cannes Film Festival about accusations Dunham made in her new memoir, ‘Famesick’. In the book, the ‘Girls’ creator alleged that Driver screamed at her, threw a chair, and once punched a hole in the wall of his trailer.
Adam Driver Shuts Down Question at Cannes
Driver was at Cannes promoting his new film, ‘Paper Tiger’, when the memoir question came up.
Driver did not offer a denial to the question of whether the accusations were true. Neither did he get pulled into a long answer.
“I have no comment on any of that,” he said, according to Deadline. “I’m saving it all for my book.”
The answer drew laughs from the room.
The actor has long been known for keeping his private life guarded, so the short response was not exactly surprising. Still, the “saving it all for my book” line gave the tense moment a lighter edge.
Whether Driver ever writes that book is another question. But judging from the reaction to Dunham’s memoir, plenty of people would read it.
Inside Lena Dunham’s Allegations
Dunham starred as Hannah in HBO’s ‘Girls’, which ran from 2012 to 2017. Driver played her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Adam.
In ‘Famesick’, Dunham claimed Driver was “verbally aggressive” and described one incident where he allegedly threw a chair near her during a rehearsal. “I remember doing a fight scene with Adam and how scary it was to meet someone so totally present with such absence,” Dunham wrote.
She claimed that while they were practicing lines in her trailer, she froze and forgot her dialogue. According to Dunham, Driver then screamed at her to say something and threw a chair at the wall next to her.
Dunham also wrote about filming an intimate scene during the first season of ‘Girls’, claiming the blocking changed and that Driver moved her around in a way that left her stunned and unsure of what had happened.
Scarlett Johansson Praised Working With Driver
Dunham’s claims have resurfaced old conversations about Driver’s intense acting style, but other co-stars have publicly praised him.
Scarlett Johansson worked with Driver on Noah Baumbach’s 2019 divorce drama ‘Marriage Story’. The film included a brutal argument scene that required both actors to scream at each other for two days.
“It was exhausting,” Johansson said at the time, but she added that she needed an actor as strong as Driver to match the scene. In 2025, Johansson again praised him, calling him “an absolutely extraordinary actor.” “If I could make every movie with Adam Driver, I would,” she said. Johansson also reunited with Driver on ‘Paper Tiger’, though she was unable to attend Cannes because of a scheduling conflict.
For now, Driver appears to be letting Dunham’s book speak for itself. His only public answer was short, dry, and designed to end the question quickly.
