The Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini controversy is still creating uncomfortable fallout across the NFL world.
The story has stayed in the headlines since photos first surfaced of the New England Patriots head coach and the former The Athletic reporter holding hands at the Ambiente Sedona resort in Arizona. Both are married with children, which made the public reaction even more intense.
Now, NFL insider Ian Rapoport is speaking out about how disturbing it has been to watch the situation play out.
Ian Rapoport Calls Vrabel-Russini Fallout ‘Sad’
Rapoport addressed the controversy during an appearance on the ‘Between The Tackles’ podcast, saying the public nature of the story has been hard to watch.
“Watching it play out in public has been really sad,” Rapoport said. “I’ve seen this in other walks of life and in other sort of like celebrities or important people, I’ve never really seen it with people that I know, and it’s really different and like not good and sad and just like all around.”
Rapoport works in the same NFL insider space as Russini, which clearly made the story hit differently for him.
Still, he said he does not blame the media for the attention around the story.
“I don’t blame the media. I really don’t, because the public thirst is there,” he explained. “The media isn’t getting people interested; they’re already interested in it. They’re feeding the beast.”
He added, “Watching this play out in public is much sadder than I ever anticipated. I would not wish anybody to go through what everyone involved in this is going through.”
Photos Sparked Major Fallout
The controversy began on April 7, when photos of Vrabel and Russini holding hands in Arizona were published. After the images spread online, Russini resigned from The Athletic a week later.
Vrabel later skipped Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft and reportedly entered counseling with his wife.
The situation did not fade after that. More photos and videos have reportedly surfaced in recent weeks, with some allegedly dating back to 2020, when Vrabel was head coach of the Tennessee Titans.
Russini has not publicly addressed the controversy since leaving The Athletic. She also deactivated her X account on April 23 after old tweets began resurfacing.
Russini And Vrabel Move Forward Differently
Russini and her husband, Shake Shack executive Kevin Goldschmidt, were later seen kissing outside their home on Mother’s Day. The couple was also reportedly spotted dining with friends at Bourbon and Branch Bar in Midtown Manhattan before attending a Bruce Springsteen concert at Madison Square Garden.
Vrabel, meanwhile, has continued to receive support from the Patriots. The NFL also announced it will not investigate the matter under the personal conduct policy.
That has not stopped the public conversation.
For Rapoport, the biggest issue appears to be the human cost. He did not defend anyone’s choices. He did not attack the coverage either. His point was colder and more uncomfortable: people are watching a private mess become public entertainment, and there may be no easy way to stop it once the audience is already there.
