Nicki Minaj is explaining why she moved toward Donald Trump, and her answer is already lighting up political and music circles.

In a new interview, the 43-year-old rapper said her shift away from the Democratic Party came after years of feeling pressure inside the music industry to support one political side. She also named two major figures in the story: Barack Obama and Jay-Z.

Minaj said she felt there was an expectation that Black entertainers were supposed to back Democrats, whether they fully agreed or not.

“It’s been ingrained in everyone’s brain in the music business that we are supposed to be a Democratic family,” she said. “I just knew they would not like me supporting Trump.”

Nicki Minaj Says Obama’s Speech Pushed Voters Away

Minaj specifically pointed to Obama’s 2024 campaign speech for Kamala Harris, where he suggested some Black male voters may have been uncomfortable with voting for a woman president.

That comment did not sit well with Minaj. “I just saw so many videos of Black men saying that they didn’t like the way they felt about that speech that Obama gave,” she said. “They felt like they weren’t being listened to.” For Minaj, the reaction from Black men online seemed to confirm a larger problem. She suggested some voters felt scolded instead of heard. That frustration became one part of her political shift.

Minaj Brings Jay-Z Into The Trump Shift

Minaj also tied her move toward Trump to her long-running issues with Jay-Z.

She has accused Roc Nation of having too much industry power and working against her behind the scenes. In the interview, she claimed that resentment toward Jay-Z runs deeper in hip-hop than people admit. “Jay-Z ended up costing Obama a lot, whether he knows it or not,” Minaj said. She then added, “Lots of rappers don’t like Jay-Z and were afraid to say it.”

That line gives the interview a sharper edge. Minaj is not only talking about politics. She is also tying her political break to old music industry grievances and power struggles.

Minaj Says She Feels Happier Supporting Trump

Minaj first spoke publicly about her sympathy for Trump during an appearance on ‘The Katie Miller Podcast’ in February. Since then, she has become one of the administration’s most visible Black celebrity supporters and attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April.

She said going public with her support has made her feel freer. Since backing Trump, Minaj said she has “never felt happier” and “never felt better.” “When you can be yourself, you’re happier,” she said.

The reaction will almost certainly be messy. Minaj is claiming her Trump support is not random. She is framing it as a break from industry pressure, Democratic expectations, Obama’s messaging, and Jay-Z’s influence. That is a lot of gasoline for one political fire.
