Tom Cruise is taking fans back to the danger zone.
The actor marked the 40th anniversary of ‘Top Gun’ by sharing throwback photos from the original 1986 film and its blockbuster sequel, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. The timing is fitting, since both movies are heading back to theaters for a limited one-week run starting May 13.
Cruise posted a mix of classic and newer images from the franchise, including Maverick giving a thumbs-up in the original film, the famous Maverick and Iceman handshake, and the beloved scene featuring Goose, his wife, Maverick, Charlie, and young Rooster singing together.
Then he added moments from ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, giving fans a reminder of just how much the franchise has meant across generations.

Tom Cruise Celebrates ‘Top Gun’ Returning To Theaters
Cruise shared his excitement in the caption, writing, “I’m excited to celebrate 40 years of ‘Top Gun’ with you all. It’s so much fun to see these two films back on the big screen!”
Fans quickly flooded the comments with nostalgia.
“We’re feeling the need, the need for speed!” one fan wrote. Another added, “This movie is a classic, I can’t wait to see it again in theaters.” One longtime viewer wrote, “My favourite movie ever. I was a teenager and love this movie so much!!” Another fan simply called it “The best movie.”
Fans Are Already Thinking About ‘Top Gun 3’
The theater return also comes as excitement builds for ‘Top Gun 3’.
The third film has been discussed for years, but it was officially confirmed this year at CinemaCon. Ehren Kruger, one of the writers behind ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, is returning to write the script.
That news has fans even more fired up.
“CAN’T WAIT FOR TOP GUN 3!!!!!!!!” one commenter wrote under Cruise’s post. Another fan told Cruise that the film had shaped his childhood dream of becoming a fighter pilot, writing that while he never got to do it in real life, he did “only in my dreams.”
For many viewers, ‘Top Gun’ is not just another action movie. It is tied to childhood, ambition, music, friendship, and one of Cruise’s most defining roles.
Now, fans can revisit both ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ in theaters before Maverick eventually flies again.
