Chet Hanks is not hiding his new living situation.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson’s son revealed that he has moved into a trailer park in Nashville while building his country music career. But according to Hanks, the decision was less dramatic than it sounds.

The actor and musician, 35, explained during an April 28 appearance on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ that he did not want to deal with furnishing another place after recently setting up a condo in Los Angeles.

“I didn’t want to get an apartment because I literally just got a condo in L.A. and I furnished it,” Hanks said. “I didn’t want to do that again, and I didn’t want to furnish it.”

Chet Hanks Explains Why He Chose Trailer Park Life

Before settling into RV life, Hanks said he was bouncing between Airbnbs and hotels.

“I was, like, staying in Airbnbs and hotels and that gets really old because I just like having my own space,” he said.

The idea came after a stay in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, where he spent time in an Airstream trailer.

“I stayed in an Airstream trailer and I really loved it,” Hanks recalled. “I was like, ‘Man, I want one of these…’ So I did. I got a trailer.”

He joked that he has not reached Airstream level yet, but said he is happy with his Jayco Eagle.

“It has everything I need. I got my kitchen. I got, you know, a walk-in shower,” he said.

Hanks then explained that trailer bathrooms can be tricky because some combine the toilet and shower into what is called a wet bath. His setup, apparently, avoids that problem.

He Pushes Back On Trailer Park Stereotypes

Hanks also made it clear that the trailer park is not what people might assume.

“I’m probably, like, the youngest person in the trailer park by like 30 or 40 years,” he joked.

He added, “It’s not what you think. You think, oh, you’re gonna live in a trailer park. It might be a little sketchy. It might be a little dangerous. It’s all just, like retirees, you know? Great people.”

When Fallon asked whether he was using the outdoor amenities, Hanks said he does have a fire pit and has used it.

Still, his daily life sounds more ordinary than rugged.

“Most of the time, I just do exactly what I do at home, which is just stay inside and lay in bed and watch Netflix and things like that,” he said.

Nashville Move Comes As His Country Career Grows

Hanks appeared on Fallon while promoting a new season of the Netflix comedy ‘Running Point.’ He is also focusing on his country band, Something Out West.

The group performed at the 2026 Stagecoach Festival on April 25, which Hanks called a major milestone.

“It was a big deal,” he said. “It was only our second performance ever.”

For Hanks, the trailer park move seems less like a fall from celebrity-family privilege and more like a practical reset. He wanted his own space, did not want to furnish another apartment, and found a setup that fits his Nashville chapter.
