Kim Kardashian may be heading into another major fashion controversy.

A new rumor claims the reality star has rented Princess Diana’s famous “revenge dress” and may wear it to this year’s Met Gala. The claim began circulating after the account @celebsnapzx posted that Kardashian had rented the iconic gown and planned to wear it for fashion’s biggest night.

There has been no official confirmation from Kardashian, the Met Gala, or anyone connected to the dress. Still, the rumor is enough to get people talking, mainly because Kardashian has already faced backlash for wearing fragile fashion history before.

Diana’s ‘Revenge Dress’ Is Fashion History

Princess Diana wore the black off-the-shoulder silk gown to the Serpentine Gallery gala on June 29, 1994.

Designed by Christina Stambolian, the dress featured a sweetheart neckline, ruched bodice, and asymmetrical hem. For royal fashion at the time, it was bold.

The timing made it legendary. Diana wore the gown the same night King Charles publicly admitted to infidelity in a televised documentary. The dress quickly became known as her “revenge dress” and later came to represent confidence, control, and public reinvention.

Diana had reportedly owned the dress for years before wearing it, but initially considered it too daring.

In 1997, the gown was sold at auction for $24,150 to a Scottish businessman.

Kardashian Has Worn Diana Pieces Before

The rumor is not completely random because Kardashian has shown interest in Diana’s fashion legacy before.

In November 2024, she wore Princess Diana’s Attallah Cross pendant to the LACMA Art + Film Gala. The necklace had not been seen publicly since Diana wore it in 1987.

Kardashian bought the piece at a Sotheby’s auction in 2023 for $197,453.

That appearance drew attention, but it was nowhere near as controversial as her 2022 Met Gala look.

Her Marilyn Monroe Dress Moment Still Follows Her

Kardashian’s most infamous historic fashion moment came when she wore Marilyn Monroe’s original “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress to the 2022 Met Gala. She borrowed the gown from Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, which had purchased it for $4.81 million in 2016.

Because of the dress’s fragility, Kardashian wore the original only briefly on the Met steps before changing into a replica. That did not stop the backlash. Fashion historians and critics argued that the gown was too culturally important and delicate to be worn at all. That history is why the Princess Diana rumor has people bracing for another fight.

If Kardashian really does arrive in the “revenge dress,” the reaction will likely be immediate. For some, it would be a headline-grabbing tribute. For others, it would be another example of celebrity access going too far.
