Melania Trump may have shared a polished royal moment with Queen Camilla, but a body language expert says the First Lady looked far less comfortable when the cameras moved in.
Melania and Camilla last spent time together in September, when Donald and Melania Trump visited Windsor Castle during a state visit. The two women rode together in the Scottish State Coach during a formal procession through the castle grounds, toured Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House and the Royal Library, and later attended a state banquet hosted by King Charles.
Now, as King Charles visits the United States, one expert helps revisit a clip from Melania and Camilla’s Windsor meeting and reads into the First Lady’s movements.
Expert Says Melania Looked Uncomfortable Around Cameras
Body language expert Dr. Beth Dawson analyzed footage showing Melania and Camilla preparing for photographs inside Windsor Castle before looking at historical artifacts.
According to Dawson, Melania appeared noticeably tense once she realized the press was watching. “Melania Trump is clearly not comfortable in front of the press, and she displays a noticeable cluster of self-soothing behaviors, such as hair stroking, particularly when she becomes aware of the camera,” Dawson said. “Her non-verbal signals suggest unease in that moment.”
Dawson pointed to specific gestures, including Melania repeatedly touching and stroking her hair. She also noted that Melania appeared to run her tongue over her teeth, which Dawson said can be a sign of nerves. “The mouth gets dry when we’re nervous, and running our tongue over the teeth is a way to help,” she said.

Her Smile Also Raised Questions
Dawson also focused on Melania’s smile, describing it as “inconsistent.”
According to the expert, that kind of facial movement can suggest a “lack of emotional continuity.” “Alongside this, there is visible fidgeting and hands are tense, further supporting the presence of underlying tension,” Dawson said.
That does not mean Melania was upset. Body language analysis is interpretation, not proof. Still, the expert’s read suggests the First Lady may have been focused on managing her public image while photographers were present.
Camilla Seemed To Change The Mood
Dawson said Melania’s behavior shifted when she engaged directly with Queen Camilla. “In that moment, there is a clear change in her behavior,” Dawson said. “A genuine smile appears, one that is more aligned with her facial expression, and we see some eye crinkles, and it is accompanied by prolonged eye contact.” The expert called it “a moment of authentic connection between the two.”

Dawson said the contrast was telling. When Melania faced the cameras, she appeared more self-conscious and guarded. When speaking with Camilla, her manner seemed more relaxed.
“This contrast is telling,” Dawson said. “When facing the camera, Melania Trump is more self-focused and engaged in managing her presentation. In contrast, during the brief exchange with Queen Camilla, her behaviour becomes more relaxed.”
For all the formality around royal visits, even this time around in the U.S., this may be the part people notice most: not the gowns or the elaborate setting, but whether Melania looked more at ease with Camilla than with the press.
