Dianna Russini’s abrupt exit from The Athletic has thrown even more fuel on a scandal that was already getting messy. The veteran NFL reporter resigned just days after photos showed her hugging and holding hands with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel at an Arizona resort, a set of images that quickly kicked off a media storm neither side seems able to contain. Both Russini and Vrabel have denied any wrongdoing, but the fallout has only grown louder.

Dianna Russini Says She Refuses to Feed the Frenzy

Russini announced her resignation in a letter sent Tuesday, April 14, to Athletic executive editor Steven Ginsberg. In the letter, obtained by the Associated Press, she defended her work and pushed back hard on the wave of speculation surrounding the photos.

“I have covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout my career, and I stand behind every story I have ever published,” Russini wrote. She also said The Athletic initially supported her after the Page Six story appeared, adding that the outlet expressed “confidence in my work and pride in my journalism.”

Her tone shifted as she addressed what happened next. “In the days that followed, unfortunately, commentators in various media have engaged in self-feeding speculation that is simply unmoored from the facts,” she wrote.

Russini made clear she had no intention of staying in the middle of a public spectacle while an internal review played out. “This media frenzy is hurtling forward without regard for the review process The Athletic is trying to complete,” she said. “It continues to escalate, fueled by repeated leaks, and I have no interest in submitting to a public inquiry that has already caused far more damage than I am willing to accept.”

She added that she chose to step aside before her contract expired on June 30 because she refused to let the episode define her career.

Resort Photos Put Russini and Mike Vrabel Under a Harsh Spotlight

The controversy exploded after seven photos published by the New York Post on Tuesday, April 7, showed Russini, 43, with Vrabel, 50, at the Ambiente Sedona resort in Arizona. In the images, the two were seen holding hands, hugging, and sitting together poolside.

That was enough to send the story racing across sports and gossip circles, especially because both Russini and Vrabel are married. The optics were rough, and the online reaction came fast.

Vrabel dismissed the controversy outright. “These photos show a completely innocent interaction and any suggestion otherwise is laughable,” he told the New York Post. “This doesn’t deserve any further response.”

Russini also insisted she was simply working in her role as an NFL reporter. “The photos don’t represent the group of six people who were hanging out during the day,” she said. “Like most journalists in the NFL, reporters interact with sources away from stadiums and other venues.”

Still, the story kept growing. Over the weekend, The New York Times reported that Russini was being investigated by The Athletic over her conduct with Vrabel, citing a source familiar with the inquiry.

Now, with Russini out before her contract was set to end, the scandal has shifted from awkward optics to full career fallout.
