Donald Trump has opened a new fight, and this time it is with Pope Leo XIV. The dispute began after the pope criticized war and spoke against policies Trump supports. Trump then attacked the pope in a Truth Social post and called him “weak.” After that, he shared an AI-made image that appeared to show himself dressed like Jesus. The post drew fast backlash.

Why does this matter? Pope Leo is the first American pope. He has spoken publicly against the war in Iran and has also criticized Trump’s immigration approach. That put the two men on opposite sides of a very public argument.

Trump Attacks Pope Leo, Then Shares AI Image

On Sunday night, Trump posted a long message attacking Pope Leo. He said the pope was weak on crime and bad on foreign policy. He also claimed Leo became pope only because the Church thought an American pope would be easier to deal with while Trump was in the White House.

Not long after that, Trump posted an AI-generated image that seemed to show himself in a Christ-like role. In the image, he appeared to be healing a sick man while others watched. That post spread quickly and angered many Catholics, church observers, and political critics.

This did not happen in a vacuum. The fight had already been building. Pope Leo had recently criticized rhetoric about war, including threats tied to Iran. He called those kinds of statements unacceptable and urged people to push for peace instead.

Pope Leo Says He Will Not Back Down

Pope Leo answered Trump the next day. He did not escalate the fight in the same style. Instead, he said his message comes from the Gospel and from the Church’s mission. He said he would keep speaking about peace and would not back away from that role.

He also made clear that he does not see his words as personal attacks. He said, “I will not enter into debate,” and said he would keep calling on people to build peace and avoid war whenever possible.

The backlash to Trump’s posts was sharp. Reuters reported that papacy scholar Massimo Faggioli said, “Not even Hitler or Mussolini attacked the Pope so directly and publicly.” That reaction shows how seriously this was taken in parts of the Catholic world.

At this point, the story is simple. The pope criticized war. Trump attacked him publicly. Then Trump posted an AI image that made the fight even bigger. Pope Leo has now made clear he does not plan to retreat.
