Ryan Gosling just pulled off something Hollywood didn’t see coming. His new sci-fi film ‘Project Hail Mary’ didn’t just open big, it exploded out of the gate with $80.6 million domestically, instantly becoming the biggest launch of 2026 and the strongest debut ever for Amazon MGM Studios.

A Win for Original Storytelling

The momentum didn’t stop there. Overseas, the film brought in another $60.4 million across more than 80 markets, landing at No. 1 in over 60 countries. That pushes its global opening to a massive $141 million, putting it on track as one of the biggest worldwide starts for any Hollywood release this year.

The win hits differently because ‘Project Hail Mary’ isn’t part of a franchise, doesn’t rely on superheroes, and isn’t a sequel. In fact, it joins Oppenheimer as one of the only original films in the past decade to open above $80 million domestically. At a time when Hollywood is leaning hard on familiar IP, this kind of breakout is turning heads across the industry.

Gosling, who last dominated theaters with Barbie in 2023, delivers what is now his biggest domestic opening as a leading man. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film is based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel and follows a science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship, light-years from Earth, with no memory of who he is. As his memories return, he realizes he’s humanity’s last hope to stop the sun from dying, with an unexpected bond forming along the way.

Critics and audiences were clearly on board. The film landed an A CinemaScore, near-perfect audience exits, and a 96 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a 95 percent score from critics. One viewer summed up the vibe online, writing, “Didn’t expect to cry in a space movie, but here we are.”

Amazon MGM Stakes Its Claim

Behind the scenes, the success is a major moment for Amazon MGM as it pushes deeper into theatrical releases. One studio executive said, “This proves Ryan Gosling is a true global star who can carry a story on this scale,” pointing to strong early buzz and presales that hinted at the breakout. The movie’s huge success will likely change how studios greenlight big-budget projects for the rest of the decade. ‘Project Hail Mary‘ shows that when the material is strong and the lead is right, the audience will show up for something new.

Elsewhere at the box office, Pixar’s ‘Hoppers’ continues to hold strong with $242.6 million globally after three weekends, while ‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come’ opened to $9.1 million domestically. Meanwhile, Indian action sequel ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ also turned in a solid performance, showing that franchises still have muscle even as original stories start making noise again.
