Ryan Gosling was supposed to be the next big star stepping into the Daniels’ weird and wildly unpredictable movie world. Now that pairing is dead, at least for now, and film fans are left with one very frustrating question: what happened?

The answer seems to come down to timing. Gosling has dropped out of the untitled new film from Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the directing duo behind 2022’s ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’, after scheduling issues reportedly got in the way. The project is set to shoot in Los Angeles this summer, but Gosling’s calendar is said to be locked up as he finishes work tied to ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’. Just like that, one of the most intriguing actor-director matchups on the board fell apart.

Ryan Gosling and the Daniels Were a Dream Match

That is what makes this sting a little more.

Gosling had looked like an unusually perfect fit for the Daniels, whose movies thrive on chaos, heart, absurdity and actors willing to go all in. Fresh off the huge attention around ‘Project Hail Mary’, he seemed poised to swap one major filmmaker pairing for another and lead the next big swing from the Oscar-winning duo.

And the timing had looked right in every other way. The untitled film reportedly secured a California tax credit, is set to shoot in Los Angeles, and already has a release date of November 19, 2027. Universal is backing the project, giving the Daniels an even bigger studio platform after the wild success of ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’.

That is why Gosling’s exit hits like a real missed opportunity. He has the exact mix this kind of movie usually needs: movie-star draw, offbeat comedy instincts and enough dramatic weight to handle whatever emotional curveball the Daniels throw at him.

What Comes Next for the Film?

For now, the biggest problem is obvious. There is no replacement yet.

No new casting has been announced, which leaves the project in an awkward spot as summer production gets closer. The film reportedly could not move off its target shoot date, so the schedule clash with ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ seems to have forced the breakup.

That alone is enough to start the movie gossip machine. Was the timing really impossible, or did one of the hottest working actors simply have to choose between two giant bets? Either way, the Daniels now need a new lead, and fast.

The directors are producing the project with Jonathan Wang through their Playgrounds deal with Universal. That gives the film serious creative backing, but it does not erase the buzz Gosling’s name brought with it.

And that may be the real loss here. This was not just casting news. It was the kind of pairing that instantly made people curious. Now it is a film fans will keep watching for a very different reason: who steps in after Ryan Gosling walks away?
