A major new chapter in the Game of Thrones universe may soon reach audiences in an unexpected way. Reports suggest that the legendary story of Aegon the Conqueror could be adapted not only as a television series but also as a feature film, giving viewers two different ways to experience one of the most important events in Westerosi history.
According to industry reports, screenwriter Beau Willimon—known for Andor and House of Cards—has completed a screenplay centered on Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros. The script reportedly follows Aegon’s arrival on the continent, his military campaigns, and the political maneuvering that ultimately united the Seven Kingdoms under Targaryen rule.
If the project moves forward, the film would mark the first time Aegon’s Conquest is fully depicted on screen. While the events are frequently referenced throughout Game of Thrones, they have never been directly portrayed in a live-action adaptation. The story chronicles how Aegon I Targaryen, along with his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys, used their dragons to defeat rival rulers and forge a single kingdom.
At the same time, HBO is reportedly continuing development on a television series focused on the same historical moment. Earlier reports indicated that writer Mattson Tomlin, who worked on The Batman Part II, joined the project to help shape a serialized version of the story.
That dual approach could offer audiences two very different interpretations of the same saga. A film adaptation could condense the sweeping conquest into a large-scale cinematic spectacle, while a television series might explore the political alliances, rivalries, and personal dynamics behind the Targaryen rise to power in greater depth.
There are still questions about timing, especially as Warner Bros. Discovery navigates potential corporate changes, including reported discussions about a major acquisition involving Paramount. While no official release plans have been confirmed, industry observers note that the immense popularity of the Game of Thrones franchise makes it likely that the story will eventually reach the screen in some form.
For longtime viewers of the franchise, the possibility of seeing Aegon’s Conquest unfold in both film and television formats represents a rare chance to explore one of the most pivotal moments in the history of Westeros.
