Ryan Gosling takes center stage in Project Hail Mary, a science-fiction film based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel.
The story follows astronaut Ryland Grace, who wakes up aboard a spacecraft billions of miles from Earth with no memory of who he is or why he’s there. As he slowly regains fragments of his past, he realizes he was sent on a desperate mission to save humanity.
Earth faces a catastrophic crisis caused by mysterious microorganisms known as astrophage, which are draining energy from the sun and threatening to trigger a global ice age.
Grace was recruited for a high-risk mission led by project director Eva Stratt, played by Sandra Hüller. His task is to travel to the Tau Ceti star system, the only known location where the astrophage phenomenon does not appear to exist.
During the journey, Grace makes an unexpected discovery when he encounters an alien life form he names Rocky. Despite coming from completely different worlds, the two realize they share the same goal: preventing a cosmic disaster.
Director Christopher Miller says the film stays true to Andy Weir’s signature approach to storytelling.
“What sets Andy Weir’s writing apart is its foundation in real science,” Miller said. “The story feels plausible rather than fantastical.”
Miller directed the film alongside longtime collaborator Phil Lord. The pair are known for projects such as The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street, but Project Hail Mary marks a major step into large-scale science fiction.
The film combines detailed scientific concepts with a character-driven story focused on isolation, resilience and unlikely friendship.
Sandra Hüller portrays Eva Stratt, the determined leader behind the mission. Though her character initially appears stern and uncompromising, the film gradually reveals a more complex personality beneath the surface.
Gosling’s performance anchors much of the story, particularly during long stretches in which his character is alone in space.
The actor brings humor and emotional depth to the role while guiding audiences through the mystery surrounding Grace’s mission.
Project Hail Mary continues the tradition of science-focused storytelling that made Weir’s previous novel, The Martian, a global hit.
