Elon Musk may be the world’s richest person, but according to his mother, his living conditions are surprisingly modest.
Maye Musk shared details about her son’s lifestyle in a post on X, describing the sparse setup at his home in Boca Chica, Texas, near SpaceX’s Starbase launch facility.
“The fridge is empty,” the 77-year-old wrote. “The garage where I slept is on the right. The shower only has one towel, so I left it for Elon.”
She added that she was perfectly comfortable with the arrangement, noting that her childhood experiences prepared her for even harsher conditions.
Maye recalled spending weeks in the Kalahari Desert as a child without access to showers due to water shortages.
“I think my parents were preparing me for this luxury,” she joked in the post.
Musk’s Boca Chica residence is reportedly a modest three-bedroom home worth about $45,000, which he previously mentioned during a 2022 podcast interview.
This is not the first time Maye Musk has described her son’s unconventional lifestyle. In 2023, she said that when visiting Texas she often slept on mattresses or blankets on the floor, couches, or in a bed set up inside the garage.
Despite his immense wealth, Musk has long been known for his minimalist habits. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO has previously said he often sleeps at work, sometimes using conference rooms, server rooms, or factory floors.
In a post on X last year, Musk wrote that he had returned to spending “24/7 at work and sleeping in conference/server/factory rooms” while focusing on his companies.
Ironically, Musk has also said that showering is the habit that has most improved his daily routine.
