Eric Dane, best known for playing Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, died at age 53 on February 19 in California. In the wake of his passing, attention has turned to both the actor’s complicated personal history and a surprising legal twist involving his reported $7 million estate.

Dane publicly revealed in April 2025 that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological disease. At the time, the actor said he was grateful for the support of his family as he faced the illness and hoped to continue working despite the diagnosis. His death came less than a year after that announcement.

As fans reflect on his life and career, renewed attention has also been given to the 2009 scandal that followed Dane for years. That summer, a leaked home video showed Dane and his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, in a bathtub with former beauty queen Kari Ann Peniche. The footage quickly became a tabloid sensation and remained a controversial moment in the actor’s public life.

In earlier interviews, Dane initially expressed regret about how the incident affected his family. Over time, however, his perspective reportedly changed. According to past comments cited in reports, the actor eventually said he had come to terms with the scandal and no longer viewed it as something he regretted.

Another development surrounding his death involves his marriage to Gayheart. Although the couple separated in 2017 and Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018, court records indicate the divorce proceedings were dismissed in 2025. That meant the two were still legally married when Dane died.

Because the divorce was never finalized, Gayheart may now be positioned to inherit the majority of Dane’s reported $7 million estate under California marital property laws. However, no official will or probate filings have been publicly released, leaving the final distribution of the estate uncertain and potentially subject to legal challenges.

Despite the headlines surrounding his personal life, Dane’s final years were also marked by family and advocacy. A statement from his loved ones said he spent his last days surrounded by friends, Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia. Remembered for both his talent and his complicated journey in the spotlight, Dane leaves behind a legacy that stretches far beyond his “McSteamy” nickname.
