Keke Palmer is reflecting on the realities of growing up in the spotlight, saying her early years in the entertainment industry often felt “dehumanizing.”

In an interview with Variety, the actress spoke about working as a child performer on major networks and how the experience shaped her understanding of fame and success.

“Being an artist became a way out for my family,” Palmer said, explaining how her career opened opportunities that hadn’t been available before.

But she also described the pressure that came with becoming successful at a young age.

“Working as a child entertainer on networks like Disney and Nickelodeon is incredibly dehumanizing,” Palmer said. “I say that without sadness. It’s just the truth — you’re treated like a product.”

Palmer first gained widespread recognition with her role in the 2006 film Akeelah and the Bee. She later became a familiar face to young audiences through the Nickelodeon series True Jackson, VP, which premiered in 2008.

Looking back, Palmer said the transition from financial uncertainty to stability created a strong sense of responsibility to keep working.

“Once you experience the difference between poverty and financial stability, there’s no going back,” she said. “Even when you’re exhausted, you keep pushing yourself because you know what’s possible.”

Palmer added that only in recent years has she fully understood the emotional impact of that period in her life.

In a separate 2025 interview with People, she reflected on what advice she would give her younger self.

“I think my younger self needed to hear that it’s okay to be angry, and it’s okay to be sad,” Palmer said.

She explained that, growing up, she often felt pressure to keep things positive for the people around her.

“As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized someone should have told her that those feelings are valid,” Palmer said.
