A viral post about Game of Thrones actress Sibel Kekilli has sparked a heated debate online, with millions weighing in on how a performer’s past should—or shouldn’t—affect their career.

The controversy began after a post on X (formerly Twitter) shared side-by-side photos of Kekilli from earlier in her career and later as Shae in HBO’s Game of Thrones. The caption referenced her brief time working in adult films before she became a mainstream actress.

The post quickly gained traction, racking up nearly 10 million views and triggering a wave of mixed reactions across social media.

Kekilli, a German-born actress of Turkish descent, worked in adult films for a short period between 2001 and 2002 under the stage name Dilara before leaving the industry.

Not long after, she was discovered while shopping at a mall and cast in the 2004 German drama Head-On. The film became a major success, winning the prestigious Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Kekilli’s performance also earned her Germany’s Best Actress award, launching her career in European cinema.

However, her past resurfaced publicly after tabloids revealed her brief involvement in adult films. Kekilli later described the intense media coverage surrounding the revelations as deeply traumatic.

Years later, she gained international recognition after being cast in Game of Thrones in 2011. Playing Shae, the lover of Tyrion Lannister—portrayed by Peter Dinklage—Kekilli became a prominent supporting character during the show’s early seasons.

The viral post has divided the internet, with many users defending the actress and highlighting her extensive acting résumé long before the HBO series.

Several commenters pointed out that Kekilli had already established a successful career in Germany years before appearing on Game of Thrones.

Others criticized the post for focusing on her past rather than her achievements, arguing that former adult performers often face unfair stigma even after transitioning into other careers.

Some users also noted that other actors with backgrounds in adult entertainment appeared in the series, but Kekilli landed one of the most substantial roles among them.

The online debate ultimately reflects a broader conversation about how society views people’s pasts—and whether former careers should continue to define them years later.
