Hailey Bieber is opening up about the unexpected—and risky—journey that led to the birth of her first child with Justin Bieber.
During a candid appearance on the SHE MD podcast, the model and Rhode skincare founder revealed that she was diagnosed with a uterine septum before becoming pregnant with her son, Jack, who was born in August 2024.
The condition, which involves a partition inside the uterus, can significantly increase the risk of miscarriage or premature birth. According to Hailey, doctors had warned her that pregnancy could be complicated and that surgery might eventually be necessary.
When asked if the pregnancy had been planned, Hailey admitted it came as a complete surprise.
“It was completely unexpected,” she said, recalling earlier conversations with OB-GYN Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi. The physician had previously cautioned her about the risks associated with the condition and advised her to be careful about pregnancy until they fully evaluated the situation.
At one point, Hailey said she was even told not to get pregnant until doctors had a clearer plan.
“She told me we might need to do a minor surgery, but we weren’t sure yet,” Hailey explained. “And I thought, ‘Okay, I’m not planning to get pregnant anytime soon.’ Then suddenly, I got pregnant.”
Dr. Aliabadi, who also co-hosts the podcast, remembered being stunned by the news. “She called me and said, ‘I’m pregnant!’ and I was like, ‘What? No!’”
A uterine septum is a congenital condition, meaning it develops before birth. Depending on its size, the partition can interfere with pregnancy by affecting how an embryo implants and grows. In Hailey’s case, doctors classified the condition as moderate—carrying a 25% to 40% risk of miscarriage and a 10% to 20% chance of preterm delivery.
Despite the frightening odds, Hailey said her pregnancy ultimately progressed smoothly.
“As the baby grew, the septum expanded,” she explained. “Everything opened up and functioned the way it was supposed to.”
Today, Hailey and Justin are settling into life as parents to baby Jack, marking a new chapter for the couple who have been married since 2018.
Looking back, Hailey says the experience was both surprising and emotional—but ultimately a reminder of how unpredictable the journey to parenthood can be.
