During a candid conversation on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, the Harry Potter star reflected on what it’s like to navigate social situations when people already have a preconceived idea of who you are.
According to Watson, her public image often arrives before she does.
“It’s as if my public persona walks into the room before I do,” she explained, describing how conversations can suddenly shift once people realize who she is. That moment of recognition, she said, can completely change the dynamic.
Watson admitted the experience can feel unsettling. When someone’s behavior abruptly changes after recognizing her, it creates a strange emotional distance—one that can make interactions feel less genuine.
“It can feel dehumanizing,” she said, explaining that people sometimes begin responding to a version of her shaped by movies, headlines, or social media rather than the real person standing in front of them.
The actress also joked about the chaos that fame can bring to dating. Finding genuine connections while living under a global spotlight, she said, can be “a complete disaster and free-for-all.”
Because of that, Watson revealed she actually prefers meeting people who don’t recognize her or haven’t seen her films.
When someone apologizes for not being familiar with her work, she said she feels relieved rather than offended.
“I tell them, ‘Please don’t apologize,’” Watson shared. “It’s actually music to my ears.”
