Jennifer Garner is looking back at a vulnerable moment early in her return to work after becoming a mom—and the unexpected support she received from Matthew McConaughey on set.
Speaking during an appearance on Hits Radio’s My Life in Movies YouTube series, the 53-year-old actress recalled filming Dallas Buyers Club shortly after giving birth to her son, Samuel, whom she shares with ex-husband Ben Affleck. With a tight 21-day shooting schedule and long production hours, Garner said balancing work and nursing quickly became overwhelming.
On her first day back, she found herself in physical pain and emotional distress because she wasn’t able to take a break to pump breast milk. Garner said the fast-paced nature of the shoot left little room for pauses, something she had previously managed on other projects. The situation escalated to the point where she became visibly upset on set.
According to Garner, McConaughey noticed something was wrong and stepped in. After she explained the situation, he reportedly asked the crew for a moment and encouraged her to take the time she needed. She said he continued to support her throughout filming, ensuring she could step away when necessary. Garner described his actions as thoughtful and said his support allowed her to avoid weaning her baby earlier than planned.
