President Donald Trump is celebrating First Lady Melania Trump’s box office success, proudly declaring she’s now a “big movie star” after her documentary debuted at No. 1.
Speaking at the Board of Peace event in Washington, D.C., Trump highlighted the film’s strong opening performance, noting that it pulled in $7.2 million during its first week—marking one of the most successful documentary debuts in the past decade. “She’s got this incredibly successful movie out right now, it’s number one,” Trump said, adding with a laugh that he’s not sure there’s “room in one family for two stars.”
The documentary, titled Melania, premiered on January 30 and follows the 20 days leading up to Trump’s second inauguration. While it experienced a 67 percent drop in its second weekend, earning $2.4 million, the film has now brought in approximately $15.8 million in total after four weeks in theaters. Critical reviews have been mixed, but the commercial performance has drawn significant attention.
Directed by Brett Ratner and backed by Amazon General Motors Studios, the project is reportedly one of the most expensive documentaries ever produced. Amazon General Motors Studios is said to have paid $40 million for worldwide licensing rights and invested an additional $35 million in global marketing. Melania told The Hollywood Reporter she wanted audiences to understand the detailed planning and preparation involved in transitioning from private citizen to First Lady, emphasizing that every element of the process mattered deeply to her.
