In an emotional new documentary, Taylor Swift: End of an Era, the pop icon opens up for the first time about one of the darkest moments to impact her world—the horrific Southport attack that left three children dead and several others injured during a Taylor Swift-themed dance workshop in July of last year.
The tragedy, which took place in Merseyside, England, claimed the lives of Bebe King (6), Elsie Dot Stancombe (7), and Alice da Silva Aguiar (9) after a 17-year-old attacker, Axel Rudakubana, went on a stabbing spree. Ten other children were also injured. Rudakubana has since been sentenced to life in prison, with the judge calling it “the most extreme, shocking, and exceptionally serious crime.”
In her documentary, Taylor tearfully reflects on how the event shook her emotionally while she was in the middle of her record-breaking Eras Tour. “We’ve had a series of violent, scary things happen to the tour,” she says. “We dodged a massacre situation, and I’ve just been all over the place.”
Becoming visibly emotional, Taylor speaks about the unimaginable loss: “There was this horrible attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance party—and it was little kids,” she whispers, her voice breaking. “I have a hard time explaining it.”
Later, Swift recalls preparing to meet some of the victims’ families before a concert. “I’m gonna meet these families tonight and put on a pop concert, you know? I’m gonna be fine because when I meet them, I’m not gonna do this—I swear to God. I’m gonna be smiling.”
Fighting back tears, Taylor compared her responsibility on stage to that of a pilot: “If a pilot said, ‘There’s turbulence, I don’t know if we’ll land,’ everyone would panic. You’ve got to stay calm for everyone else.”
In a deeply moving moment captured on camera, Taylor is seen sobbing in her mother Andrea’s arms after meeting the survivors and the victims’ families. “I know you helped them,” Andrea tells her gently. “It doesn’t seem like it, but you did.”
Reflecting on the toll of fame and empathy, Taylor admits, “From a mental standpoint, I live in a reality that’s very unreal a lot of the time. But it’s my job to handle all these feelings and then perk up immediately to perform.”
Following the tragedy, Swift had issued a heartfelt statement: “The horror of yesterday’s attack in Southport is washing over me continuously, and I’m just completely in shock. The loss of life and innocence… These were just little kids at a dance class. I’m at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families.”
