For most families, Home Alone is a holiday classic. For Macaulay Culkin’s kids, it’s just a really funny movie—starring a kid who happens to look a lot like Dad.
During his “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin” event in Long Beach on November 22, celebrating the film’s 35th anniversary, the former child star revealed that his young sons, Dakota (4) and Carson (3), are obsessed with the Christmas comedy—but haven’t quite figured out that their dad is Kevin McCallister.
“They have no idea that I’m Kevin,” Culkin joked to the audience.

He said the boys get excited every time they see Home Alone pop up on Disney+, completely unaware they’re cheering for their own father. “I’m trying to keep up that illusion as long as possible,” he laughed.
Still, the truth might not stay hidden for long. Culkin recalled a moment when Dakota, while looking at an old family photo, innocently remarked, “That kid looks like Kevin.” Luckily, the comment passed without follow-up questions.
Sometimes, though, Dakota takes his imagination a step further. “Do you remember when you kicked burglars out?” the 4-year-old asked his dad one night. “You slide down the stairs?” Culkin replied, “‘You liar! That was me!’”
The Home Alone icon shared that watching the movie with his sons has given the film new meaning. “I do really love watching that movie with my boys,” he said. “It’s special seeing it through their eyes.”
Culkin may forever be remembered as the clever kid who outwitted burglars, but to his little ones, he’s just “Dad”—and that’s the only role he’s in a hurry to keep playing.
