Variety reported that Miss Universe Jamaica contestant Gabrielle Henry suffered a serious accident that sent shockwaves through the pageant community. On November 20 local time, organizers announced that Henry would withdraw from the Miss Universe finals after falling from the stage during the preliminary evening gown round on November 19.
Social media quickly filled with videos showing Henry, dressed in an orange gown and stilettos, slipping on the runway and tumbling off the stage, followed by footage of her being carried away on a stretcher as fans expressed deep concern.
Miss Universe owner Raúl López updated supporters by stating that they left the hospital at midnight Bangkok time and confirmed that Henry suffered no fractures and is receiving strong medical care. The Miss Universe Jamaica organization also emphasized that her injuries are not life threatening and that she is undergoing full evaluation to ensure recovery.
The incident adds to the turmoil surrounding this year’s pageant, which has already faced controversy after judge Omar Harfouch revealed on November 18 that an informal group had preselected 30 finalists out of 136 contestants before the preliminary stage, prompting his resignation.
Two additional judges, including Chairwoman Princess Camilla and former soccer star Claude Makélélé, also stepped down, further destabilizing the competition.
