In a recent legal ruling, the operator of the controversial YouTube channel Anti-Fandom Shelter has again received a suspended prison sentence for producing and distributing defamatory content targeting high-profile celebrities, including IVE’s Jang Wonyoung. The channel’s malicious videos, which generated significant revenue, reignited debate over online harassment in the entertainment industry.
On November 11, the Incheon District Court’s Criminal Appeals Division 1-3, led by Judge Jang Min Seok, upheld the initial sentence of two years in prison, suspended for three years. The defendant, identified only as A, was convicted of defamation and insult under South Korea’s cybercrime laws.
The court also upheld the fine of 210 million KRW (157,500 USD) and 120 hours of community service, stating the punishment was appropriate and balanced given the nature of the crimes. Between October 2021 and June 2023, A uploaded 23 defamatory videos targeting seven major celebrities, including BTS members V and Jungkook, solo artist Kang Daniel, and Jang Wonyoung, earning approximately 250 million KRW (187,500 USD).
While both sides appealed the January verdict—prosecutors seeking harsher penalties and A arguing for leniency—the appeals court rejected both claims. In related civil cases, Jang Wonyoung was awarded 50 million KRW (37,500 USD) in damages, Kang Daniel received 30 million KRW (22,500 USD), and BTS’s V and Jungkook jointly won 76 million KRW (57,000 USD).
