In a crucial first step toward justice, a man who repeatedly spread shocking lies and death threats against K-Pop superstar IU has received a suspended prison sentence.
According to legal insiders, the Seoul Central District Court recently handed down a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, to Mr. A, who was convicted of defamation, insult, and violating the Stalking Crime Punishment Act.
Lies, Threats, and ‘Extreme Fear’
The severity of the harassment was laid bare in court. Mr. A allegedly posted false, malicious claims on a public blog 29 times between May and July of last year, spreading bizarre conspiracy theories—including the egregious and baseless claim that IU was a “Chinese spy” and was involved with criminal organizations or even murder.
Worse yet, after IU’s agency, Edam Entertainment, took legal action, the harasser escalated his attacks, sending staff terrifying emails with threats like, “I will make their life miserable and I will kill them.” The court noted that the defendant’s actions “instilled extreme fear” in the victim and her team.
Why No Jail Time? And IU’s Stance
While the court acknowledged the “severity of his crime cannot be underestimated,” especially given his prior offenses and the victim’s refusal to show leniency, the suspended sentence was granted due to Mr. A’s documented history of mental illness treatment. The prosecution has since appealed the leniency of the first ruling.
Meanwhile, Edam Entertainment is not backing down. Last November, the agency announced a zero-tolerance policy against online abusers, identifying around 180 defendants at the time. The agency made its position crystal clear: “We want to make it clear that there will be no settlements or leniency for these online harassers.”
IU and her team remain committed to a strong, ongoing legal response, sending a powerful message that these illegal activities will not be tolerated.
