Lee Soo Geun is mourning the passing of his father, who died on Tuesday, after a long illness. He was 81.
Lee Soo Geun’s agency, Big Planet Made Entertainment, confirmed the news in an official statement: “Lee Soo Geun’s father has passed away after a prolonged illness. The funeral will be held privately, attended by close family and relatives only.”
The wake is currently being held at Asan Medical Center in Seoul. The agency added, “We kindly ask for warm condolences and thoughtful support, so that Lee Soo Geun and his family can grieve in peace.”
Lee Soo Geun has previously opened up about his complicated yet heartfelt relationship with his father. In a 2023 episode of the KBS Joy variety show Ask Us Anything Fortune Teller, he shared a personal reflection: “In my father’s eyes, it was always about my older brother. He would even hang up on me if I called,” he recalled.
But as his career grew, so did their bond. “Then one day, I started to do well. The amount of allowance I gave him changed, and eventually, I even built him a house. From that point on, all of his concerns came to me. It felt like I had finally become the center of his attention.”
Lee Soo Geun also expressed gratitude toward his older brother, who played a vital role in their father’s care. “Still, my father always missed my brother because he’s the eldest. And the things I can’t do, my brother does in person, he drives our dad to his hospital appointments and takes care of him,” he said, highlighting the close-knit nature of their family.
Lee Soo Geun married Park Ji Yeon in 2008. The couple, who have a 12-year age gap, met through work and eventually became romantically involved. They share two sons.
Park Ji Yeon has faced serious health challenges over the years. During her second pregnancy, she developed preeclampsia, a potentially dangerous condition that affects blood pressure and organ function. She is currently battling ongoing kidney issues and is preparing for a kidney re-transplant, with her older brother expected to be the donor.
