Kim Nam Gil recently shared a funny yet candid reflection on his casting experiences, revealing that he’s never been offered a wealthy heir role, a popular trope in Korean dramas.
On Sunday, Netflix Korea’s YouTube channel dropped a new video titled “Nam Gil’s Trigger-Happy Chat and Young Kwang’s Persistent Shyness | Promoting Trigger | Netflix.”
The video features Kim Nam Gil and Kim Young Kwang, who star together in Trigger, engaging in a lighthearted conversation. During the chat, Kim Young Kwang expressed his desire to take on a heart-wrenching, melancholic romance that portrays deep loneliness. Yoo Byung Jae humorously commented, “From a writer’s perspective, for someone as handsome as Kim Young Kwang to pull off that kind of role, you’d need a lot of circumstances to make it believable.” Kim Nam Gil added, “Right, he’d need some flaws,” which had everyone laughing.

The conversation then shifted to chaebol roles, with Yoo Byung Jae asking Kim Young Kwang, “Haven’t you played a lot of chaebol characters?” Kim Young Kwang replied, “I’ve been cast as a chaebol since my rookie days.”
Nam Gil then chimed in, “Those roles suit you well, Kim Young Kwang. As for me, I just don’t fit the chaebol image.” Kim Young Kwang, always quick with a comeback, teased, “But you’re actually a chaebol in real life!” which sent Kim Nam Gil into a fit of laughter. Kim Nam Gil jokingly responded, “People do think that about me, but honestly, being mistaken for a chaebol isn’t so bad!”
Kim Nam Gil continued with a bit of nostalgia, “I never get offered chaebol roles. When we were starting out, they’d always say, ‘Want to make it big? Play a doctor or a prosecutor.’ So, we had to dress the part. But when I showed up, people would look at me and say, ‘No matter what you wear, you still look broke.'” This comment had everyone in the room laughing.

He added, “I’ve never had the chance to play one of those refined characters who just stands around in a suit looking sharp. If anyone has a role like that, I’m all ears!”
Meanwhile, Kim Nam Gil and Kim Young Kwang star in Netflix’s Trigger, a high-stakes, gun-action disaster thriller. The series follows two men who, for their own reasons, take up arms amidst a dangerous wave of illegal firearms and escalating violence in South Korea.
