Oliver Tree’s life and career were cut short in a devastating helicopter crash in Brazil.
The California-born singer, producer, and filmmaker died on Sunday, June 14, 2026, after two helicopters collided mid-air above the Recreio dos Bandeirantes neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. He was 32.
Rio de Janeiro Civil Police identified Tree as one of six victims killed in the crash. There were no survivors.
The tragedy came just days before Tree was expected to begin the European leg of his world tour.
Two Helicopters Collided Over Rio
The crash happened around 9 a.m. local time, according to reports.
One of the helicopters came down on a car dealership where several electric vehicles were parked. The impact sparked a fire at the site, with roughly 20 vehicles reportedly catching flames.
According to information released by the Military Fire Brigade of the State of Rio de Janeiro, one aircraft had been headed to Angra dos Reis on the Costa Verde coast.
That helicopter was carrying pilot Alexandre Souza and four passengers: Lucas Brito Chaves, Oliver Tree Nickell, Lucas Vignale, and Gaspar Prim. The second helicopter was reportedly carrying out a refueling operation. Its sole occupant was pilot Charles Marsillac. All six people were killed.
Officials Are Investigating The Cause
Brazilian aviation authorities have launched an investigation into what caused the mid-air collision.
CNN Brasil reported that Brazil’s Air Force, through CENIPA, was called to the scene to begin collecting data, preserving evidence, and assessing aircraft damage.
Agents from the Third Regional Service for the Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents are also gathering information and preserving key engine and fuselage components.
Those findings are expected to be part of the final report on what contributed to the crash.
Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency also issued a public statement expressing deep regret over the six deaths. The agency said it is examining the documentation and legal status of both helicopters and the pilots involved.
Tree Was Days Away From European Tour Dates
Tree was in Brazil as part of an active world tour. He had performed in São Paulo on June 6 and was scheduled to begin the European leg in Lisbon, Portugal, on July 1. Additional dates were planned in Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, Milan, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, and other cities.
The tour was titled ‘The World’s First World Tour’ and supported his fourth studio album, ‘Love You Madly, Hate You Badly,’ which was released on April 24, 2026. Tree had said the album was developed over two years while he traveled widely.
His final Instagram update reportedly came the night before the crash, when he shared a story from a recording studio with other musicians.
At the time of his death, Tree had nearly 20 million followers across social media platforms.

Who Was Oliver Tree?
Born Oliver Tree Nickell on June 29, 1993, in Santa Cruz, California, Tree built a career around music, comedy, visuals, and a deliberately strange public persona.
He signed with Atlantic Records in 2017 after his song ‘When I’m Down’ went viral. His debut album, ‘Ugly Is Beautiful,’ arrived in 2020 and charted on Billboard. He followed it with ‘Cowboy Tears’ in 2022, which reached No. 7 on Billboard’s Alternative Albums chart, and ‘Alone In A Crowd’ in 2023.
Tree became known as much for his image as for his music. The oversized clothes, signature bowl cut, stunt-heavy videos, and absurdist online presence helped make him one of alternative music’s most recognizable figures.
Alternative Music Loses A Singular Figure
Tree’s death marks a major loss for fans who followed his unpredictable mix of music, comedy, and performance art.
He was midway through an ambitious tour that was expected to cover more than 30 countries and all seven continents. Dozens of dates were still ahead. Instead, the tour now ends with a fatal crash in Rio and an investigation still looking for answers.
For now, fans are left with the same grim facts: two helicopters collided, six people died, and Oliver Tree’s final chapter came just as he was preparing for another major run on the road.
