Joan Cusack is back on the red carpet, but she does not sound desperate to live there.
The beloved actress made a rare public appearance at the ‘Toy Story 5’ premiere in May, ending an 11-year red carpet absence. Cusack, 62, returns as Jessie in the latest Pixar sequel, alongside Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear.
Her appearance quickly sparked chatter online, with fans thrilled to see her back in the spotlight.
Joan Cusack Explains Her Hollywood Step Back
Cusack told Variety that she feels grateful for her long career, but she has also learned to value life outside the Hollywood machine.
“I feel incredibly fortunate to have had such a long career in this industry,” she said.
Still, Cusack said there is something powerful about stepping away from the constant public cycle.
“There’s also something wonderful about living your life, raising your kids, being in Chicago, and just being a regular person,” she said. “That’s truly priceless.”
She added that avoiding major red carpet events can feel refreshing.
Cusack Built A Life Outside The Spotlight
Cusack never fully disappeared from acting. But she has clearly chosen a quieter rhythm.
The two-time Oscar nominee first became widely known through ‘Saturday Night Live’ and later broke through in ‘Working Girl.’ She went on to steal scenes in films like ‘In & Out,’ ‘Runaway Bride’ and ‘School of Rock.’
In 2011, while raising her two children and working on ‘Shameless’ in Chicago, Cusack opened a lifestyle shop called Judy Maxwell Home.
“My kids were young, and I didn’t want to take on acting jobs that would take me away from home,” she told The New Yorker in 2019.
‘Toy Story 5’ Brings Jessie Back
Cusack has continued working selectively over the years. She returned for ‘Toy Story 4’ in 2019, appeared in ‘Klaus’ and ‘Let It Snow,’ and took TV roles in ‘Homecoming’ and ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events.’
Now, ‘Toy Story 5’ gives her another reason to rejoin the public conversation.
“It’s Jessie’s story,” Cusack said during a May 28 interview with Virgin Radio U.K. “And it’s absolutely wonderful.”
For fans, Cusack’s red carpet return felt like a comeback. For Cusack, it sounds simpler than that.
She has been living her life. And honestly, that may be the most refreshing Hollywood story of all.
