Donald Trump’s latest medical exam is getting new attention after a report found that 22 medical specialists were involved.
That number is nearly double the amount from his previous checkups and appears to set a presidential record, according to a new analysis. The detail is now fueling fresh questions about the 79-year-old president’s health, even as the White House insists he remains in excellent condition.
Medical experts told The Washington Post that the number of specialists was unusual. “It is an extraordinary number,” Jonathan Reiner, a longtime cardiologist for former Vice President Dick Cheney, told the outlet.
Trump Reportedly Saw 22 Specialists
The White House told The Washington Post that some generalist doctors were included in the 22-person specialist count. Still, the number stood out because it was far higher than Trump’s previous medical exams.
The president’s physician, Dr. Sean Barbabella, wrote after the May exam that Trump “remains in excellent health, demonstrating strong cardiac, pulmonary, neurological and overall physical function.”
Trump also celebrated the results himself. On Truth Social, he declared that “everything” had “checked out PERFECTLY.”
But that did not stop scrutiny. Observers scrutinized the exam because it came after an unusual mid-year medical screening Trump got in October after his annual physical earlier that year. That timing made observers look even more closely at what the White House chose to disclose.
Doctors Questioned What Was Left Out
Some medical experts said the report could have included more detail.
One doctor told The Wall Street Journal that Trump’s cardiovascular testing could have been described more fully.
“If I was creating a report to send to another physician, I would have mentioned a little bit more about the carotid ultrasound,” Dr. William Shutze, a Texas vascular surgeon, said.
He said the report could have stated how much plaque was present, since many people have some buildup there.
Other observers noted that Trump’s medical records suggest he may no longer be taking a common hair-loss prevention drug.
None of those details prove a serious medical issue.
But together, they have added to renewed attention around Trump’s age, health, and transparency.
Biden’s Health Scrutiny Still Looms Over 2026
Trump’s health is being examined in a political climate already shaped by questions about Joe Biden’s age and fitness.
Biden, previously the oldest man to hold the presidency, faced intense scrutiny over his health during his final campaign. His poor debate performance became a major turning point, leading to months of questions about whether aides and party leaders had shielded the public from signs of decline.
Now, critics are trying to turn similar questions back on Trump. They have pointed to frequent bruising seen on his hands, his public appearances, and recent moments that spread online.
Trump’s supporters argue that the White House physician’s report should settle the matter. Critics argue that the public deserves more detail, especially given the number of doctors involved in the latest exam.
Voters Already Have Concerns
Polling suggests the issue is not limited to online critics.
A recent Washington Post, ABC News, and Ipsos poll found that 59 percent of respondents said they did not believe Trump had the mental acuity to serve as president. Another 55 percent said they did not think he was physically healthy enough to carry out his duties. Those numbers show why the 22-specialist detail is likely to stick.
Trump’s doctor says he is in excellent health. Trump says everything checked out perfectly.
But the unusually large medical team involved in the exam has given critics a new question to push: if everything was normal, why did the checkup require so many specialists?
