Sean Penn is facing a fresh wave of backlash after turning an anti-selfie rant into something far more controversial.

The Oscar-winning actor spoke at the Tribeca Festival in New York during a conversation with CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins. What started as a complaint about celebrity selfies quickly spiraled after Penn invoked a Holocaust survivor and a child with a disability while explaining why he dislikes fan photo requests.

The reaction online was immediate. Critics called the comment bizarre, insensitive, and needlessly ugly.

Sean Penn’s Selfie Rant Took A Strange Turn

Penn made it clear that he does not like selfies with fans. “People should not do selfies ever with anyone,” he said. “It’s bad for you; it’s bad for everyone.”

Then came the remark that set off the backlash. “It’s the Holocaust grandmother and her 6-year-old paraplegic wheeling over? It’s a hard no,” Penn said.

The comment stunned viewers because of the examples he chose. Many questioned why a discussion about celebrity photos needed to include a Holocaust survivor or a young child with a disability.

That is where the criticism grew louder. One X user wrote, “No surprise.” Another called Penn “insufferable,” while someone else said he could have found a far less offensive way to say he does not want to take selfies.

Penn Said Crowds Trigger His Anxiety

Penn’s comments came while he was discussing why he skipped the Oscars earlier this year.

The actor said large social settings have become increasingly difficult for him, and that the discomfort is not limited to award shows. “It would be the same if this group was going to an afterparty and one stepped into that,” Penn said.

He added that he has now committed to avoiding gatherings with more than eight people. “That always represented social discomfort for me; too many people,” Penn explained. “I’m now down, committed for life, that I won’t go anywhere to be in a designated group beyond eight people.” Penn said large events leave him overwhelmed because interactions become brief, repetitive, and emotionally draining.

The Golden Globes Were Reportedly His Breaking Point

Penn said the Golden Globes in January convinced him he could no longer handle major Hollywood events.

“I went to the Golden Globes; I’d never been to that before,” he said. “And that’s where I decided, ‘I can’t do this.’” He said the best he could feel after those events was relief.

Penn also claimed he was repeatedly approached for selfies while leaving the ceremony, including by 16-year-old ‘Adolescence’ actor Owen Cooper.

Instead of attending the Oscars, Penn said he traveled to Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelensky and watched the ceremony from abroad. “I really got to enjoy the Academy Awards for the first time,” Penn said. “It was great.”

Penn’s Reputation Made The Backlash Worse

For critics, Penn’s latest controversy did not land in isolation.

The actor has spent decades making headlines for blunt political comments, confrontational moments, and legal trouble.

In 1985, while married to Madonna, Penn was involved in a confrontation with photographers in Nashville. Two years later, while filming the 1988 crime drama ‘Colors,’ he was arrested after punching film extra Jeffrey Klein. At the time, Penn was already on probation after a misdemeanor battery case involving songwriter David Wolinski at a Los Angeles nightclub. Because the on-set incident violated his probation, Penn was sentenced to 60 days in jail for assault. He ultimately served 33 days.

That history has followed him for years, and it made his latest remarks easier for critics to frame as another example of Penn saying too much in the worst possible way.

Penn may have been trying to explain his discomfort with crowds and celebrity photo requests. Instead, his Holocaust and disability reference became the headline.
