Kai Trump did not look too rattled when her grandfather, President Donald Trump, got booed at Madison Square Garden.
The 19-year-old daughter of Donald Trump Jr. and Vanessa Trump attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals with Trump on Monday, June 8. The pair sat in a suite with New York Knicks owner James Dolan as the Knicks faced the San Antonio Spurs.
Before the game, Trump and Kai were shown on the jumbotron during the national anthem. Boos could be heard in the background.
Trump smiled with his hand in a salute. Kai smirked while holding her hand to her heart.
That small reaction quickly became part of a larger fight around Trump’s appearance at MSG, where some Knicks fans had already warned that his visit would bring security delays, bad energy, and a political sideshow to a major NBA night.
Kai Trump Seemed Unbothered By The Boos
After the clip spread online, fans debated whether Trump and Kai were bothered at all.
“They smile and laugh the more they get boo’d,” one person wrote.
Another user said, “Don’t think he cares. He is President!”
A third viewer seemed unsurprised by the crowd reaction, writing, “Figured it would happen. This man spoiled the entire event.”
Kai later suggested she had a good night anyway. On Instagram Stories, she posted a selfie set to Jay-Z’s ‘Empire State Of Mind’ featuring Alicia Keys. “The atmosphere was amazing,” she wrote. “Let’s get that win on Wednesday. Go Knicks.”
Knicks Fans Were Already Angry Before Tip-Off
The boos did not come out of nowhere.
Before Trump arrived, some Knicks fans were furious about the extra security around his visit. Madison Square Garden announced a strict no-bag policy and TSA-style screening procedures. Fans were also strongly encouraged to arrive at least two hours before tip-off.
The U.S. Secret Service also announced hard street closures around MSG.
“Regardless of who it is, this is ridiculous,” one Knicks fan account wrote. “Everyone else’s life has to be changed because one person is coming.” Another fan wrote, “Nobody wants bro there.”
One New Yorker in Knicks gear said fans were ready to boo Trump if he showed up, adding in cleaned-up wording, “Let him come. We’re going to boo you.”
Stephen A. Smith also criticized the disruption, saying his issue was with any politician whose appearance slows down fans and interferes with the city’s Knicks energy.
Trump Said The Reaction Was ‘Amazing’
Trump saw the night very differently.
When asked about the reaction from Knicks fans, he said, “I thought great. I mean, I thought it was amazing, actually. You mean when they have the camera on me?” He added, “I thought it was very good, yeah. It was certainly amazing. It was mostly cheers. It was loud, and it was very enthusiastic.”
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver defended the heightened security, saying fans understood the situation and that it added to “the bigness of the event.”
Still, the online mood was far more split. Some fans viewed Trump’s appearance as part of the spectacle. Others felt it dragged politics into a rare Knicks Finals moment and made an already expensive night harder for regular fans.
Kai left saying the atmosphere was amazing. Trump said the reaction was mostly cheers. The crowd’s reaction told a messier story.
