Anthony Stewart Head, the English actor best known to many fans as Rupert Giles on ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ has died. He was 72.

Head’s daughters, Emily and Daisy, said the actor died peacefully from complications related to pneumonia while surrounded by family. The news has hit fans hard, especially because Head’s death comes only two months after his longtime partner, animal welfare advocate Sarah Fisher, died suddenly at 61.

For viewers who grew up with ‘Buffy,’ Head was more than a familiar face. He was the calm center of a supernatural teen drama that became one of television’s most beloved shows.

His Daughters Shared The News

Emily and Daisy called Head their “extraordinary father” in a statement and spoke about the impact of his long career.

“It has been, and forever will be, an honour and a privilege to be his daughters,” they said, adding that they had witnessed “firsthand the impact both he and his work have had on so many.”

They also said Head loved his job and knew how fortunate he was to work across so many productions over several decades.

“We know how dearly he will be missed by friends, colleagues, and fans of the shows he was in,” they added.

Head Became A Fan Favorite On ‘Buffy’

Before his American TV breakthrough, Head was already well known in the U.K. He became a familiar face through Nescafé’s Gold Blend commercials, where he appeared opposite Sharon Maughan in a serialized coffee romance.

He also built a stage career, including his early 1990s West End run as Frank-N-Furter in ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ at London’s Piccadilly Theatre.

Then came ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ in 1997.

Head played Rupert Giles, the Watcher and school librarian who guided Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy Summers through demons, prophecies, and teenage chaos. He remained a regular through the show’s sixth season, then continued as a special guest star.

After ‘Buffy’ ended in 2003, Head appeared in ‘Little Britain,’ played King Uther Pendragon in ‘Merlin,’ and later starred in the horror musical ‘Repo! The Genetic Opera.’ In 2020, he joined Apple TV+’s ‘Ted Lasso’ as Rupert Mannion and became a series regular in Season 3.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Led Emotional Tributes

Head’s death follows the recent deaths of two other ‘Buffy’ stars. Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris, died in March at 54. Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Dawn, died in February 2025 at 39.

Gellar shared backstage photos with Head on Instagram and opened her tribute with a callback to the Season 5 finale.

“Tell Giles I figured it out and I’m ok,” she wrote.

Then she added, “Well I don’t have it figured out and I’m not ok. But I know I’m the lucky one because I knew you.”

Alexa PenaVega, who played Head’s daughter in ‘Repo! The Genetic Opera,’ called him “such a talent” and “a dream to work with.”

David Boreanaz, who played Angel on ‘Buffy,’ remembered Head as “so kind and generous of a soul.”

Eliza Dushku, who played Faith, wrote, “For every scene and time shared, I give thanks. Rest in love and peace, kind sir. A dear one.”

For fans, Head leaves behind a career that stretched across commercials, stage, cult TV, comedy, fantasy, and streaming hits. For ‘Buffy’ viewers, though, he will always be Giles.
