Whoopi Goldberg is not ready to be rushed into Hollywood’s AI future, and she made that very clear on ‘The View.’
The 70-year-old EGOT winner pushed back during a Hot Topics discussion about celebrities encouraging women to understand and use artificial intelligence. The segment included comments from Demi Moore, Goldberg’s ‘Ghost’ co-star, along with Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston.
Goldberg’s issue was not only with AI itself. It was with the pressure.
Whoopi Goldberg Pushes Back On Demi Moore’s AI Comments
During the segment, ‘The View’ played footage of Moore speaking at Cannes in May. Moore said resisting AI is “a battle that we will lose in Hollywood.”
That did not sit well with Goldberg.
The two actresses share a major Hollywood history. Goldberg won her Oscar for starring opposite Moore in the 1990 hit ‘Ghost.’ More recently, they reunited at the 2025 Oscars, where Moore earned her first Best Actress nomination for ‘The Substance.’
Still, Goldberg made it clear that longtime affection does not mean automatic agreement.
“I interact with people and do things I understand,” Goldberg said.
She compared AI to other major technology shifts, including cars replacing horse-drawn carriages. She said those changes come with upsides and drawbacks. But she does not want anyone telling her to move faster than she chooses.
“I don’t want anyone telling me I have to ‘lean in’ to keep up,” Goldberg said. “I’ll figure out what works for me on my own terms.”
Sunny Hostin Says She Uses ChatGPT Often
Goldberg’s stance was not shared by everyone at the table.
Sunny Hostin, 57, said she uses AI frequently and joked that she has a “Ph.D. in ChatGPT.” She also said she uses the tool like a therapist and marriage counselor.
“AI is a learning technology, and it’s at its most basic stage right now,” Hostin said. “This is the perfect time to get involved and learn how to use it.”
Guest co-host Kara Swisher, a longtime tech journalist, offered a warning of her own. She said men are currently setting many of the rules around AI, which raised another concern inside the broader conversation.
Goldberg, though, stayed focused on personal choice.
“You should’ve encouraged me two years ago when this first became a big deal,” she said. “I’ll get to it when I’m ready.”
Goldberg Has Warned About Smart Tech Before
This is not Goldberg’s first public warning about tech that listens, learns or talks back. In 2023, she cautioned viewers about Amazon’s Alexa during a live episode of ‘The View.’
“She’s always listening,” Goldberg said at the time. “I don’t want her in my house.”
She also said she does not want technology smart enough to lock her out or stop her from driving her car.
Other stars have entered the AI debate too. Sandra Bullock recently said Hollywood will eventually “have to lean into” the technology, which drew backlash from Dionne Warwick on social media.
Lisa Kudrow, Aniston’s ‘Friends’ co-star, also tackled the issue through fiction. The final season of her HBO comedy ‘The Comeback’ centered on the dangers of AI writing an entire sitcom.
Goldberg’s message, though, was simple. She is not saying AI has no use. She just does not want a lecture, a countdown clock or a celebrity push telling her when to get on board.
