Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s divorce may be settled, but one major family milestone is still ahead.

Their youngest children, twins Vivienne and Knox Jolie-Pitt, turn 18 on July 12. That birthday is expected to close the last custody-linked chapter of Jolie and Pitt’s long and bitter split. The twins are the youngest of the six children the former couple share. Once they become legal adults, none of Jolie and Pitt’s children will remain under a custody agreement.

For a divorce that began in 2016 and stretched across years of legal conflict, July 12 carries more weight than a normal birthday.

Twins’ Birthday Ends Custody Chapter

Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt on Sept. 19, 2016, days after a private plane incident that became central to the former couple’s legal war. Jolie accused Pitt of abusive behavior during the flight. Pitt denied wrongdoing, and authorities did not charge him.

The former couple were declared legally single in 2019, but the divorce did not fully end there. Custody, financial issues, and property disputes continued for years.

Jolie and Pitt finally reached a divorce settlement in December 2024, more than eight years after the original filing. At the time, Jolie’s lawyer described the settlement as “one part of a long ongoing process.”

Vivienne and Knox turning 18 now changes what remains of the custody side of that process. After July 12, there will be no minor children left for a custody agreement to cover.

Children’s Names Keep Family Rift Public

The upcoming birthday also comes after several of Jolie and Pitt’s children have moved away from the Pitt surname, either legally or publicly.

Shiloh legally changed her name to Shiloh Jolie after turning 18.

Vivienne was credited as Vivienne Jolie for her work on Broadway’s ‘The Outsiders’, though that does not confirm a legal name change. Zahara has also publicly used Jolie, including at a college event and during her Spelman College graduation.

Maddox, the eldest of the six children, has reportedly filed to legally remove Pitt from his name and go by Maddox Chivan Jolie. That request has reportedly not yet been granted.

Those choices have kept the family distance visible even after the divorce settlement. The children are no longer just part of their parents’ court story. They are becoming adults, making their own public and private decisions about identity.

Miraval Fight Keeps Jolie And Pitt Connected

Vivienne and Knox’s birthday does not mean Jolie and Pitt are completely done in court.

The former couple is still fighting over Château Miraval, the French estate and winery they once owned together. Pitt sued Jolie in 2022 over her sale of her stake in the property, arguing that she violated an agreement between them. Jolie has denied that claim. The Miraval dispute has continued even after the divorce settlement, keeping the former couple legally connected.

So July 12 will not erase the years of allegations, custody battles, and public strain. It will, however, mark a clear legal shift. After that date, the Jolie-Pitt story becomes less about custody orders and more about what each child chooses as an adult.

For Jolie and Pitt, one of the most public parts of their split is nearing its final family deadline.
