Anne Hathaway has finally addressed the online chatter about her face, and her answer was much simpler than the internet expected.
The Oscar winner recently faced a wave of speculation after red carpet photos led some users to claim she had secretly undergone cosmetic surgery. Some posts compared her past movie appearances with her newer looks tied to ‘The Odyssey’, while others argued that heavy cosmetic work can affect how actors express emotion on screen.
Hathaway has now made it clear that her lifted red carpet look did not come from a facelift. It came from two small braids.

Hathaway Says It Was Just A Hair Trick
Hathaway previously shared an Instagram video showing the styling trick behind the look. The method involves two small braids near each temple, pulled back and pinned to subtly lift the face.
In a new Elle interview, she was asked whether the video was a direct response to the plastic surgery rumors.
“I wouldn’t say pointed,” Hathaway said. “But we’re at a time when people feel very confident in assuming what they think is fact, and sometimes what they think is accurate, and sometimes it’s not.”
The ‘Devil Wears Prada’ star said she usually prefers not to respond to appearance chatter at all. “My preference would be to never comment on anything and to just live in the mystery and not draw attention to myself,” she explained.
This time, she felt the speculation had gone too far. “The speculation has gotten so loud that you do feel the need to just get your truth out there,” Hathaway said.
Hathaway Calls Out Big Assumptions
Hathaway said she still wonders whether posting the video was the right move. “I’ll probably always wonder, ‘Should I have posted that or not?’” she said. She added that she wanted to keep doing what made her feel confident on the red carpet, but the conversation around her appearance became distracting.
Then she pushed back on how casually people online talk about cosmetic procedures. “These are huge medical decisions that people are presuming,” Hathaway said. “I wanted to show that, like, ‘No, I didn’t make a huge medical decision. It’s just two braids.’”
Still, Hathaway did not turn the moment into a full anti-surgery statement. “And, by the way, the other thing about all this is, I might still get a facelift someday,” she added.
Hathaway Reflects On Public Scrutiny
The actress has been through this kind of internet storm before.
Years ago, Hathaway became the target of the so-called “Hathahate” era, when online criticism of her personality and public image became relentless. Looking back, she said that period forced her to face deep insecurity. “One of the things about younger me is she was really scared,” Hathaway said. “And I think that fear made me harsh with myself.”
She also admitted she worries that her own self-criticism may have affected how she treated others. “I actually get nauseous thinking about it,” she said.
For Hathaway, the latest rumor cycle seems to have crossed a line because it turned a hairstyling trick into a medical assumption.
