Emily Blunt is looking back at one of the most physically miserable moments she shared with Tom Cruise on the set of ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’.

The actress opened up during a recent episode of ‘Hot Ones’, where she recalled filming a difficult drop ship sequence for the 2014 sci-fi movie. The scene required Blunt and Cruise to wear huge armored suits while being suspended in harnesses.

It was hot, heavy, and deeply uncomfortable. And Cruise, being Cruise, tried to power through it with pure intensity.

Blunt Says Cruise’s Energy Was Hard To Resist

Blunt said Cruise’s enthusiasm had a strange effect on everyone around him.

“When you’re surrounded by Tom Cruise’s enthusiasm, it kind of bleeds in you and you feel like you can’t let him down by complaining about anything,” she said. “It’s a very powerful force coming off him.”

That energy worked for a while. Then the physical reality of the scene started to win.

Blunt said her suit weighed around 80 pounds, and because she was hanging in a harness, the pressure became painful fast. “I’d kind of had it,” she admitted. “It was very hot in there.” She joked that the weight of the suit and harness had her wondering whether she would “be able to have children one day.”

Cruise Finally Started To Crack Too

Blunt said she eventually noticed that even Cruise was getting frustrated.

“We’re swinging there and I could see Tom, the enthusiasm was starting to unravel a little bit,” she said. “So I knew I had an in.”

According to Blunt, Cruise was annoyed by how long the scene was taking and started calling for the cameras to roll.

That was when she finally said what she was thinking. “I just looked at him and I went, ‘This sucks,’” Blunt recalled. Cruise had a very specific reply. “It’s a challenge,” he told her.

Blunt Had Told The Story Before

This was not the first time Blunt shared the moment. She previously told the story on ‘The Graham Norton Show’ in 2014, with Cruise sitting beside her.

At the time, Cruise explained why he tried not to complain. “If I start complaining, it’s on,” he said while laughing. “If I start going down, it’s on.”

Blunt still pushed back. “Tom! It sucks!” she remembered telling him. Eventually, even Cruise gave in with a simple, “Okay!”

The story works because it sounds exactly like both of them. Blunt was exhausted and blunt. Cruise tried to turn pain into motivation. Somewhere between the two, a brutal sci-fi shoot became a strangely perfect bonding moment.
