Ryan Reynolds showed up for Stephen Colbert’s final ‘Late Show’ episode without Blake Lively, and a new report claims that was no accident.
The actor appeared solo during Colbert’s farewell show, joining a long list of celebrity guests that included Paul Rudd, Bryan Cranston, Jon Stewart, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, and Paul McCartney.
Lively did not attend. According to insiders, that was a calculated choice, not a snub from the show.
“The show had zero problem with Blake attending,” one source said. “She was welcome and fully expected at one point. Ryan simply decided it would be better if he flew solo.”
Reynolds Reportedly Wanted The Focus On Colbert
The decision reportedly came down to timing and attention.
Colbert’s final episode was a major TV moment after years behind the desk. Insiders claim Reynolds understood that Lively’s appearance could have shifted the conversation away from Colbert and toward her legal fight with Justin Baldoni.
“Ryan understood that if Blake showed up, she would instantly become the story,” one insider said. “The attention would shift away from Stephen Colbert’s goodbye and straight onto the controversy surrounding Blake.”
Another source put it more bluntly. “Blake’s image is extremely polarizing right now, and Ryan knows it,” the insider claimed. “He didn’t want Stephen’s final show overshadowed by gossip, social media backlash, or questions about Blake.” The source said going alone was “the smartest move.”
Lively’s Legal Battle Still Follows Her
Lively recently settled her dispute with Baldoni, her ‘It Ends With Us’ co-star and director. She had accused him of sexual harassment and of launching a retaliatory misinformation campaign against her. Both sides claimed victory after the settlement, and no money reportedly changed hands.
A joint statement said the film made “a meaningful impact in the lives of domestic violence survivors and all survivors.”
The statement also said Lively’s concerns “deserved to be heard,” while adding that both sides remained committed to workplaces free of misconduct and damaging environments.
Reynolds was reportedly heavily involved in the decision to settle. “Ryan saw the full picture early,” one insider said. “He knew the longer this dragged on, the more it would erode everything, her career, her reputation, even their closest relationships.”
Blake Is Reportedly Being Careful In Public
Lively has reportedly become selective about public appearances since the controversy.
One insider claimed she understands the value of a strong image without the risk of questions. “Blake knows exactly how powerful a perfect photograph can be,” the source said. “A stunning image creates conversation without creating risk. Photos don’t ask difficult follow-ups.”
For now, that strategy appears to include stepping back from events where her presence could hijack the story.
Reynolds attending Colbert’s farewell alone may have looked simple from the outside. Behind the scenes, insiders say it was a careful move in a very messy public chapter.
