Meghan Markle’s latest public appearance has turned into another online fight, and this one comes with a strange AI twist.
The Duchess of Sussex, 44, traveled solo to Geneva, Switzerland, on Sunday to unveil the Lost Screen Memorial alongside World Health Organization director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The installation honored children who died after alleged online harm and digital abuse.
Markle used the moment to warn about social media algorithms, harmful content, and artificial intelligence. Then critics claimed her own speech sounded like it may have been written with AI. That is where the backlash really took off.
Meghan Markle’s AI Speech Draws Online Suspicion
A source familiar with the reaction said online critics began running parts of Markle’s speech through AI detection tools after the event.
“There’s been a flood of commentary on forums from people insisting they ran parts of Meghan’s address through AI detection systems like ChatGPT analyzers and other large language model tools because the wording felt unusually structured,” the insider said.
The source added that some critics believe the speech carried signs of AI-assisted writing, though there is no confirmed proof that Markle used AI to prepare it.
The irony is obvious. Markle was warning about the dangers of fast-moving technology, while critics were accusing the speech itself of sounding machine-made. “Fairly or unfairly, that contradiction has become a major talking point online,” the insider added.
Meghan Warns Children Are Being Shaped By Algorithms
During the memorial event, Markle told global leaders that children are increasingly vulnerable online.
“Children today are being shaped by systems designed to capture attention at any cost: relentless algorithms, exploitative engagement, and endless exposure to harmful content that they are not seeking out,” she said.
The memorial featured 50 illuminated lightboxes showing cellphone lockscreen photos of children whose families believe online harm contributed to their deaths.
Markle also reflected on the personal weight of the display. “Each name belonged to a child who was loved beyond measure,” she said. “A child whose laughter once filled a kitchen. Whose shoes once waited by a front door. Whose future once felt limitless.”
She warned that AI is “not just repeating past mistakes,” but “accelerating and amplifying” digital dangers facing children around the world.
Critics Call Appearance ‘Pointless’
Another source familiar with public communications said major speeches are often created with help from advisers, researchers, staff, and sometimes tech-assisted drafting tools. The insider said it would be unusual for a public figure to prepare a global address alone, especially at an event tied to the WHO.
Still, critics jumped on the AI angle fast because Markle’s topic was technology risk. “The controversy probably says as much about public suspicion toward AI as it does about Meghan herself,” the source said.
Another critic went further, calling it the “ultimate irony” and questioning Markle’s authority on the issue. The source also called the appearance at the Lost Screen Memorial “totally pointless.”
Markle and Prince Harry have focused more of their Archewell work on online safety in recent years, including support for families who blame social media for the deaths of their children. This speech was meant to spotlight that cause. Instead, it also gave her critics a new line of attack: was an anti-AI warning written with the help of AI?
