Kim Kardashian is facing backlash after a mistaken Instagram post turned into an expensive legal fight for the wrong man.
The reality star and SKIMS founder previously shared an Instagram Story in 2024 urging followers to support a petition to pause the execution of Texas death row inmate Iván Cantú. But the post included a photo of a different man with the same name, a New York resident who had no connection to the case.
Kardashian removed the post after realizing the mistake. The New York man later sued her, claiming the post exposed him to “hatred, contempt, and/or ridicule” and caused emotional distress and damage to his reputation.
He lost the lawsuit last November. Now, he says the fallout is still not over.
Kim Kardashian Wins Lawsuit After Mistaken Identity Post
Kardashian has spent years building a public image around criminal justice reform, advocating for prisoners and death row inmates while also studying law.
In the 2024 post, she tried to draw attention to the Texas inmate’s pending execution. The caption read, “The state will execute Ivan Cantu in 2 days. Please sign the petition to demand that Collin County DA request a withdrawal of the execution date.”
But instead of posting the Texas inmate’s image, Kardashian used a photo of the New York man also named Ivan Cantu.
Although the post was taken down, Cantu sued. His case was eventually dismissed, and the court later ordered him to cover Kardashian’s legal fees.
Man Says $145K Legal Bill Could Ruin Him
According to legal documents, Cantu has been hit with a bill of about $145,000 to cover Kardashian’s legal costs. He has since filed a new motion asking the court to dismiss the fees.
In the motion, Cantu reportedly argued that Kardashian is a billionaire who was “born and raised in great wealth and luxury,” while he is a working father raising two children.
That detail set off social media.
“He shouldn’t have to pay,” one Instagram user wrote. “Pay your own legal bill, Kim.” Another said, “Kim needs to take responsibility for her mistake. This is actually very sad. He’s going to be in financial ruin over her mistake.” A third added, “She is rich as all get out. $145k should be chump change to her.” Others accused Kardashian of being “greedy” and called the situation unfair.
Critics Say Kim Should Drop The Fee Demand
The backlash is not about whether Kardashian won the lawsuit. It is about whether she should be asking a misidentified man to pay her legal fees after the mistake began with her post.
For critics, the optics are ugly: a billionaire celebrity made an error, a regular father sued and lost, and now he may be on the hook for a six-figure bill.
Kardashian has not publicly responded to the latest criticism. But the internet’s reaction has been blunt. Many users believe that even if she has the legal right to seek reimbursement, she should not pursue the money.
The legal fight may have ended in her favor. The public opinion fight is looking much messier.
