Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s Netflix crime thriller has now turned into a real-life legal fight.
Several Miami-area police officers are suing the longtime Hollywood collaborators over ‘The Rip’, claiming the film damaged their reputations by portraying officers tied to a major narcotics raid in a negative light.
The movie, released in January, stars Damon and Affleck as officers in the Miami-Dade Police Department narcotics unit. It was inspired by the 2016 Miami Lakes narcotics raid, where authorities seized more than $24 million in cash. That bust became the largest money seizure in Miami-Dade history.
Now, some of the real officers involved in that raid say the film crossed a line.
Miami Officers Say ‘The Rip’ Hurt Their Reputations
The lawsuit targets Damon and Affleck through their production company, Artists Equity. The officers claim ‘The Rip’ unfairly suggests corruption among law enforcement figures connected to the 2016 raid.
Jonathan Santana, a deputy for the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, said the title itself carries a damaging meaning.
“When you rip something, you’re stealing something. We never stole a dollar,” Santana said.
He added that people have teased him since the movie came out. “Pretty much saying, you know, how many buckets of money did I steal?” he said.
Santana’s attorney, Ignacio Alvarez, argued that the film left a lasting mark on his clients. “They portrayed police officers as dirty, they portrayed my clients as dirty. Now their reputations are hurt,” Alvarez said. He added, “My clients are now hurt for the rest of their lives with everybody [perceiving] that they’re dirty.”
Hialeah Mayor Also Blasted The Film
This is not the first backlash tied to ‘The Rip’.
The film, which also stars Steven Yeun and Kyle Chandler, was shot mainly in Hialeah, Florida. After its release, Hialeah Mayor Bryan Calvo criticized the movie, saying it made the city look unsafe. “This movie is a slap in the face to our law enforcement personnel,” Calvo said in January.
He argued that the portrayal could hurt the city’s image among people who have never been there. “If you have never been to Hialeah, if you live somewhere else in this country and you see this film, I wouldn’t want to come here, and that’s a problem,” he said.
Calvo also pointed out that the actual raid took place in Miami Lakes, not Hialeah. “The real story that we saw depicted in the movie ‘Rip’ took place in Miami Lakes,” he added.
Damon And Affleck Face A New Hollywood Headache
For Damon and Affleck, ‘The Rip’ was another major project under Artists Equity, the production company they launched together. The lawsuit now puts the film’s “inspired by true events” angle under sharper pressure.
Crime thrillers often borrow from real cases. That does not mean the real people involved will accept how they are depicted.
The officers say the movie made them look corrupt. City officials say it gave Hialeah a damaging image. And now, a Netflix release has turned into a courtroom dispute over reputation, policing, and how far Hollywood can go when adapting real-life events.
