Kate Middleton reportedly faced an unusual royal request before she officially joined the family: change the spelling of her name.

According to royal expert Christopher Andersen’s upcoming biography ‘Kate! The Courage, Grace, And Power Of The Woman Who Will Be Queen,’ King Charles and Queen Camilla, then Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, allegedly wanted Catherine to become Katherine with a K.

The reason was surprisingly petty. Having Charles, Camilla, and Catherine all using “C” names apparently felt like too much.

Charles And Camilla Reportedly Wanted Kate To Use A K

Kate married Prince William on April 29, 2011, becoming a senior member of the royal family and taking on new titles. But according to Andersen, she was also met with a strange name suggestion behind palace doors.

Camilla reportedly thought the change made sense because the public already knew Catherine as Kate.

The issue, according to the account, came down to royal cyphers. Charles and Camilla already had “C” initials with crowns above them. Adding Catherine created another “C” in the same royal orbit. Andersen claims the family saw three “C” names as “overkill.”

Kate reportedly did not appreciate the idea.

Prince William Was Reportedly Furious

According to Andersen, Kate was “offended” by the request, while William was “fuming.”

The future king reportedly found the suggestion “insulting, not only to Kate but to her entire family.”

That part matters because William has long been known to have a close relationship with the Middleton family. Asking Kate to alter the spelling of her given name was not just a branding tweak. It touched her identity and family background.

The suggestion was eventually dropped.

Prince Harry Also Mentioned The Name Request

Andersen is not the first person to bring up the reported name-change idea.

Prince Harry wrote about the same request in his 2023 memoir ‘Spare,’ claiming Charles and Camilla wanted Kate to change Catherine to Katherine because there were already two royal cyphers with a C.

“Charles and Camilla. It would be too confusing to have another,” Harry wrote. “Make it Katherine with a K, they suggested. I wondered now what came of that suggestion,” Harry added. The answer appears obvious. Kate kept Catherine. The royal family survived the extra C.

If the account is accurate, the episode shows how even something as basic as a name can become a palace issue when titles, symbols, and hierarchy are involved.
