King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s U.S. visit began with smiles, cameras, and tea at the White House. But according to a lip reader, one private exchange with Donald Trump was far more awkward than it looked.
The King and Queen were welcomed by Trump and First Lady Melania Trump on the White House South Lawn as they began their historic state visit. The visit is tied to America’s 250th anniversary and is expected to last four days.
Although the greeting looked formal and friendly from the outside, lip reader Nicola Hickling claimed Trump tried to bring up the recent White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting and tensions involving Vladimir Putin. According to Hickling, King Charles appeared to shut the conversation down and suggest they discuss it another time.
Trump Reportedly Brought Up The Shooting
The royal visit went ahead despite security concerns after a possible assassination attempt on Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Before the King and Queen arrived, Trump said Charles and Camilla would be “really safe” during their time in the U.S. Buckingham Palace confirmed the visit would “proceed as planned,” though with some adjustments.
During the South Lawn greeting, Hickling claimed Trump appeared to say, “This shooting…” Charles allegedly responded, “I’d rather not stand about here too long.” The King also reportedly said, “I feel I shouldn’t be here.” Hickling claimed Trump then asked whether Charles was OK before adding, “It’s not a good thing. I wasn’t prepared, but now I am prepared.”
Charles Reportedly Tried To Move Past Putin Talk
According to the lip reader, Trump then shifted to Russia and claimed he had been speaking with Putin. “So right now, I am talking to Putin,” Trump allegedly said. “He wants war.”
Charles reportedly did not engage with the topic and appeared to suggest they discuss it later. Trump allegedly continued, “I’ve got a feeling… if he did what he said, he will wipe out the population.” The King then reportedly tried to end that part of the conversation with, “Another time.”
The Visit Continued With A Garden Party
After tea at the White House, Charles and Camilla attended a garden party with hundreds of guests, including former Olympian Tom Daley and senior Trump administration officials.
The royal couple’s visit has already drawn heavy attention, from protocol questions to body-language analysis and now lip-reading claims about what was said during the greeting.
It is worth treating the reported exchange carefully. Lip-reading is interpretation, not a confirmed transcript. Neither Buckingham Palace nor the White House has publicly confirmed the exact wording.
Still, the alleged moment fits the broader tension around the visit: royal ceremony on the surface, heavy political anxiety underneath.
