Olivia Wilde is not letting one bad camera angle turn into a full internet pile-on without responding.
The 42-year-old actress and filmmaker became the subject of harsh online comments after a red carpet clip from the San Francisco International Film Festival went viral. The close-up video, which was viewed more than 10 million times, showed Wilde looking wide-eyed and gaunt, leading some trolls to compare her to Gollum.
The reaction quickly spread across social media, with some users making cruel comments about her appearance and others speculating about what caused the unusual look. Wilde, however, responded with humor instead of panic.

Wilde Blamed The Camera Angle
The actress addressed the viral moment on Instagram Stories in a light-hearted video filmed by her younger brother, Charlie Cockburn. “Olivia Wilde, do you care to address recent rumors that you’re a resurrected corpse?” he joked. Wilde laughed and replied, “I don’t know why I was so close to the camera; I didn’t have to be.”
Wrapped in a blanket and clearly amused by the ridiculousness of the moment, she delivered a deadpan response, “I’m not dead.”
She also suggested that a fisheye lens may have distorted her face in the clip, making the footage look harsher than she did in person.

Trolls Were Harsh About Her Appearance
The online reaction was not all harmless. Some commenters expressed concern, but others were far crueler. One user asked, “What is happening to these actresses?” while others made unfounded assumptions about her body and appearance.
The situation is another reminder of how quickly a single red carpet clip can become internet evidence for people who want to speculate. One bad angle, one strange lens and one viral post can suddenly turn into a full public debate over someone’s face.
Wilde’s actual event look was much less dramatic than the clip suggested. She wore a crisp white T-shirt with a flowing black satin skirt featuring an asymmetric hem and subtle train. Her hair was pulled back with a bow, giving the outfit a clean and understated finish.
Wilde Was Promoting Her New Film
Wilde attended the festival to promote her latest project, ‘The Invite.’
The dark comedy, produced by A24, stars Wilde alongside Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz, and Edward Norton. Wilde also directed the film, which follows a dinner party that spirals out of control.
The movie is already drawing attention ahead of its June 26 release.
For Wilde, though, the festival appearance briefly became less about the film and more about an unflattering close-up. Her response was simple: blame the lens, laugh at the corpse jokes, and remind everyone she is very much alive.
